Villeneuve is releasing Dune 3 on the exact same day as Avengers: Doomsday. And he locked up IMAX exclusivity for opening weekend. Run the format math. Dune 3 is shot entirely on 65mm film stock, 15-perf IMAX for the big sequences, 5-perf 65mm for the rest. Villeneuve hired Linus Sandgren, the La La Land DP who won’t touch a digital camera, and went native film from day one. The IMAX prints originate on the negative. 18K equivalent resolution. No upscaling, no digital intermediary. Avengers: Doomsday is shot digitally. Standard practice for Marvel. Which means on December 18, Dune owns every IMAX screen in the US and Marvel can’t buy a single one on opening night. Disney spent somewhere between $500 and $600 million producing Doomsday. They need $1 billion just to break even. And they don’t have IMAX. Dune: Part Two cost roughly $190 million and grossed $715 million worldwide, with $145 million from IMAX alone. That’s 20% of total gross coming from a format Marvel can’t access on the biggest revenue weekend of the release. Warner Bros. claimed December 18 first. Disney moved Doomsday there from May 2026 after already pushing it from May 2025. Three release dates in two years. Villeneuve wrapped filming in November 2025 and hasn’t moved once. A $190 million film just bodied a $600 million film out of every premium screen in America before a single trailer dropped. The MCU is getting mogged by a guy in a stillsuit.

Steven Spielberg is famous for figuring out shots, camera moves, and actor blocking on the day of filming. Here’s a great example of that instinctive directing style from the set of Jurassic Park (1993).

En 1969, Donald Sutherland tenía poco más de treinta años y una carrera que empezaba a despegar. Viajó a Yugoslavia para rodar una película bélica junto a Clint Eastwood. El proyecto se llamaba Kelly’s Heroes y, en teoría, sería un trabajo rápido. Pero aquel rodaje estuvo a punto de terminar su historia para siempre. Durante la filmación contrajo meningitis, una infección grave que avanzó con una velocidad alarmante. Lo ingresaron en un hospital de Novi Sad y en pocos días su estado se volvió crítico. Cayó en un coma profundo que se prolongó durante semanas. La noticia llegó a su esposa, Shirley Douglas, en forma de un telegrama urgente: Donald estaba muy grave y quizá no sobreviviría. Mientras tanto, en el hospital, los médicos luchaban con pocos recursos. Los antibióticos escaseaban y la situación parecía cada vez más desesperada. Sutherland permaneció seis semanas en coma. Con los años contaría algo inquietante: aseguraba que, aunque su cuerpo estaba inconsciente, podía escuchar lo que ocurría en la habitación. Después de aquello, su carrera se transformó. En 1970 protagonizó MASH, una película que se convirtió en un fenómeno cultural. A lo largo de más de sesenta años de carrera participó en casi 200 producciones y en 2017 recibió un Óscar honorífico por toda su trayectoria. Some clarification here: "no green screen" doesn’t mean "no VFX”. There were, in fact, thousands of VFX shots in the film (2018!) Green screen is sometimes used in lieu of building sets or figuring out locations/lighting in advance, which can be noticeable if not done carefully, and is something we didn’t want to do. We built the entire interior of the Hail Mary ship - but within the ship, there were still wire and puppeteer removals and ceiling replacements, etc. When Ryan is outside on the hull of the ship, we shot him in front of a black background for space and a shifting hue background when he was up against the aurora of a planet which allowed for truer interactive light on him than a green screen would. The wide space exteriors and spaceship shots were entirely digital and beautifully done by ILM. Rocky was a seamless blend of puppetry and animation from Framestore. And other great work from many more. It really does take a village and we had the best of the best on our side.
