I checked and it's rather interesting that Singapore hasn't yet said a word - that I could find - about Trump's blockade of Hormuz when, if you listen to Balakrishnan's speech 👇, the EXACT same UNCLOS articles he cites - transit passage as an unconditional right - apply. All the stranger because he said he was speaking "as a matter of principle and not because we're taking sides." Funny how what he called "the constitution of the oceans" stops applying when it's the US Navy doing the blocking.

Singapore’s Foreign Minister on why he cannot accept negotiating with Iran for safe passage of ships. Definitely worth listening to:

I suspect the real reason for Singapore's opposition to a toll on Hormuz is not some high-minded devotion to international law, but because if it's set as a precedent and a toll were to exist on the Strait of Malacca, it would basically kill their current business model. See, geographically speaking, Malacca runs primarily between Malaysia and Indonesia - Singapore only controls a small stretch at the southeastern exit. Yet currently they capture most of the strait's commercial value through port services, bunkering, and transshipment: it's basically like them having the best "service station" on the world's most popular free highway. What the Hormuz precedent - if established - is all about is the revenge of geography: power given back to the countries that own the road, as opposed to those with the best rest-stop. Fantastic news for Malaysia and Indonesia (which is partly why you're seeing key Malaysian political figures, like Nurul Izzah Anwar, issue a highly unusual rebuke of Singapore over Balakrishnan’s remarks: x.com/amerhadiazmi/s…), but a big threat to a city-state whose entire economy is built on being the best service provider on what's largely someone else's waterway.

Arsenal needs an in-house meeting about its use of social media. It creates drama out of nothing, generates ‘must win’ tension, and asks the fans to bring energy whilst the players don’t. It’s creating a disconnect between fans and team, when they want it to do the opposite.

Hi @hannahyeoh, salam sejahtera I think the policy is silly and disconnected from reality, but I appreciate you trying to do something. No need to "work with Zus to collect the data....analyse the pattern". Feel free to ask your officers to contact me - using only open-source data (public transport ridership, traffic cams, Google Maps), I can already show you the time distribution of travel into KL in the morning, and out of KL in the evening. And if you add the additional data which gov has access to, you'll get an even richer picture. Hint: It's massively driven by the time people send their kids to school, and your policy will barely move the needle.

@NewsBFM To understand this issue better, I think it is worth watching this 3 minute explanation first. It answers your questions about why this is being done instead of focusing on other initiatives, how ZUS will benefit, and what @hannahyeoh really wants to achieve through Bangun KL.

My 18-month investigation into Sam Altman and OpenAI in @NewYorker, with @andrewmarantz, is out now. Read here: newyorker.com/magazine/2026/… Thread on a few of the key findings here: x.com/RonanFarrow/st…
Ronan Farrow@RonanFarrow

(🧵1/11) For the past year and a half, I've been investigating OpenAI and Sam Altman for @NewYorker. With my coauthor @andrewmarantz, I reviewed never-before-disclosed internal memos, obtained 200+ pages of documents related to a close colleague, including extensive private notes, and interviewed more than 100 people. OpenAI was founded on the premise that A.I. could be the most dangerous invention in human history—and that its C.E.O. would need to be a person of uncommon integrity. We lay out the most detailed account yet of why Altman was ousted out by board members and executives who came to believe he lacked that integrity, and ask: were they right to allege that he couldn't be trusted? A thread on some of of our findings:
