Each country may structure the “purpose of travel” section slightly differently, but the idea is always the same. If your purpose of travel is TOURISM, do not select BUSINESS. The category you choose determines which documents you must provide. Choosing the wrong purpose can cause problems with your application. Don't make the embassy people angry. (Copied) Tourism: If you would visit the Schengen area for leisure, such as vacation, sightseeing, or for other tourist activities. Visiting family or friends: If you are visiting family or friends in the Schengen area, who are residents there. In such case, usually a letter of invitation from the host is required (the person being visited I will post the letter of invitation in my next post). Business/Professional: If you would be travelling to the Schengen area to participate in a meeting, a conference, or other activities in a business sense. Official visits: If you are going to the Schengen area to participate in official meetings, to do diplomatic duties, to conduct negotiations, etc. Medical treatment: If you are traveling to the Schengen area for the object of medical treatment, taking usually a treatment which cannot be had in the home country. Short-term study: If you have been accepted for participation in short study by a school or study institution (not over three months). Attending cultural, sport or religious occasions: If you are travelling to visit an exhibition, a match, or other religious or cultural manifestations in the Schengen area. Airport Transit Visa/Transit through Schengen Area: To pass through the international transit area of an airport in a Schengen (or other participating) country Other: If your reason for travelling is not covered by these, you can tick “other” in the application, and state particulars.
