In 1993, Tomm Tennent was born in South East Australia with so much extra skin it could cover a five-year-old child. After months of tests, researchers noticed similarities between Tomm and Shar Pei puppies, which are also born with extra skin. They found Tomm had 100 times the normal amount of hyaluronic acid in his skin, and like the puppies, doctors expected his appearance might change as he grew older. Dr. Andrew Ramsden predicted the condition would improve over time, and he was right. Though Tomm faced teasing and exclusion at school, he stayed strong. When asked what he saw in the mirror at age 11, he said, “a kind, loving person.” Today, over 30 years later, Tomm has grown into his skin. He’s happily married to Hannah and lives in Frankston, Victoria, Australia. His Facebook profile reads: “Life’s simple. You make choices, and you don’t look back.”
