Crazy that Constantinople fell almost entirely because the Emperor didn't want to pay for a Hungarian's autism project (building a 19 ton cannon with a 30" bore inspired by much smaller models introduced by the Mongols) so the autist in question asked the Ottomans if they would like to fund his superweapon instead. Being tired of repeatedly losing, they said yes and threw money at him to make the damn thing, which destroyed the previously unassailable walls of the city using 1200lb cannon balls with a range of up to a mile. Dude wasn't concerned with politics, religion, or the civilizational consequences of his actions. He just really wanted to make an enormous cannon, and by god did he succeed.

@___TheGOOdWitch 1. The crusade did not expanding Christianity; it was to defend Byzantium, which was besieged by Islam. 2. The expansion of Christianity was done through evangelization and only became military when a king became Christian and forced his subjects to convert.Really was martyrdom:

underrated reason to get AI morality right even if they never take over: humans who adopt an AI's morality will be significantly advantaged over those who don't, and will have better/easier lives. lesswrong.com/posts/kSKJrAW6…

Ten years ago, it would have been inconceivable to me for the release of a new Star Wars feature film to be this little of a big deal. The Last Jedi / Rise of Skywalker fiasco destroyed a staggering amount of cultural and economic value.

Paul Graham "Each 1% of wealth tax=20% of income tax. It's clear that politicians don't get this from the way they talk about a "mere 1%" wealth tax. None of them would speak of adding a "mere 20%" to the income tax rate In the median case, US state politicians talking about adding a "mere 1%" wealth tax are talking about causing the residents of their state to have the highest taxes in the world. I'm optimistic that we can teach them. The answer's not hard to understand, once you realize the question exists." paulgraham.com/winc.html

Turns out this is a weird question. I was trying to design a survey to figure out if men were learning incorrect things in porn. My goal was okay - ask guys if they watch porn. Then ask them about, expectation of what women want done to them in bed. See if the guys who watch porn report different expectations. Simple, right? Okay. So how do I ask about this? "You have sex with a woman. If you tried [slapping her face], do you think she'd like it?" Well, a guy reading that would prob go "it depends on the woman." I could say "The last time you had sex with a woman, do you think she would have liked if you tried [slapping her face]?" Well, probably for most men that's gonna be a girlfriend or wife, and by the time you're regularly banging someone, you're gonna know her preferences, and you'd just be answering directly for what you know she likes. Okay, so this has to be like, about a girl you just met? First time having sex, and assume yall are bad at communication and so don't talk about your preferences in advance. So I could say "You just meet a woman, if you slap her face without asking her do you think she'd like it?" Most guys would never try this with a girl they just met without asking. So okay - this scenario needs to have *some* level of trust involved. Maybe it's like, the second or third date after you've built up friendly rapport and established you like each other? But... most guys still would ask! When I escorted, guys would sort of indicate a request to do anything particularly porny. Guys rarely just wildly try something brand new without some type of in-the-moment negotiation about 'can i?' because they don't wanna offend me or ruin the mood. So I ended up settling on this scenario: "Imagine you've been on a few dates with a girl and have good rapport. You decide to try a thing, *without* discussing it beforehand. Predict how likely it is that she would respond positively to it." Like, when I had to really drill down into it, picking a scenario clear enough to measure where porn is causing guys to do things women don't want in bed, required an extremely specific scenario. Because either you're so new that trying some crazy porn scenario is *retarded* to pull out on a woman without checking in first, or you're sufficiently established that any level of basic communication would make it clear that this isn't a welcome activity. So when people are arguing that porn teaches men to do porn things in bed, idk what concrete thing they're envisioning. I think probably if this is true, it's much more subtle. (Btw, I found that men who watched porn, were slightly more accurate at predicting the responses of women's preferences in bed, but especially women who watched porn.)

@EneaszWrites consumption is likely a good thing as increases GDP and velocity of money and likely leads to more building as more money is in the economy all taxes disincentivize some things but some such as LVT's, pigouvian taxes and similar are better than others

@edwin_mccallum @agent_scruples Borrow costs money, they have to pay interest. The whole thing only works because Die is a key step, which A - is a hell of a catch, and B - is a problem that's entirely the govt's fault and could be fixed by congress with a single bill. Call them!

@EneaszWrites @agent_scruples most of the billionaires do Buy, Borrow, Die so they don't sell the wealth. It's often margin loans. also, that's just a legal definition but rates of taxation can obviously be changed on capital vs income or things like wealth

@edwin_mccallum it disincentivizes creating wealth, which is pretty bad, because most of the wealth created isn't captured by the creator, it's spread out among the consumer base. This would incentivize consumption over investment and building.

@EneaszWrites theres a large difference. income tax reduces incentive to work. wealth tax works whether you invest (as in PG's example), work, don't work, etc.. so doesn't disincentivize work. moving income taxes 20% higher would change incentives to work way more than a 1% wealth tax

@edwin_mccallum @agent_scruples small businesses are the least good kind of business though. Also, wealth gains obviously shouldn't be recognized as income. They aren't income. You can't spend wealth gains. You have to sell some of your wealth to spend it, and then that gets taxed.

@agent_scruples @EneaszWrites proposed wealth taxes start at either $50M or $1B so don't affect over 99.9% of people. doesn't impact small businesses. way better tax structure since you have to tax where the money actually is and billionaires avoid taxes by not having their wealth gains recognized as income

My policy nerds - these guys are paying for your ideas. re how to disperse gains from AI labor to the ~100% of humans that will become unemployed. Track 1 - a 500–1,000 word explanation of your idea, written to convince a politician (no pay) Track 2 - $3000 if accepted, needs a 500–1,000 word description of each proposed policy proposal, clearly identifying which issue area from the scope of work the contributor intends to address; A one-paragraph biography for each member of the proposed project team, highlighting their most relevant experience; A CV or resume for each member of the proposed project team. Make UBI, or birthright % ownership of chips/bots, or whatever, happen. Go get 'em! csaip.org/rfi
