𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗪𝗘 𝗗𝗢𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗢 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗘?
We’re still reeling from the impacts of the oil crisis, and now new forecasts point to a potentially powerful El Niño that could disrupt weather patterns worldwide—including in the Philippines.
We are already under an El Niño Watch, and according to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, nearly all models now point to at least a moderate El Niño by June.
During the last four months of the year, some projections already suggest sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific could exceed +2.5°C, which is a threshold associated with the unofficial term “super El Niño,” last seen during the 2015–2016 event.
While El Niño is often associated with heat and drought, PAGASA warns 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗼𝗻 (𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘁), increasing the risk of heavy rains, floods, and landslides, especially in western Luzon and Metro Manila.
As the year progresses, conditions may 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿’𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻. Scientists warn of record-breaking temperatures, droughts, and pressure on water and power supplies.
It’s still too early to confirm whether this will reach “super” El Niño levels, but the likelihood of a significant El Niño event is now increasingly high. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗳 𝗘𝗹 𝗡𝗶𝗻̃𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲. #habagat #disaster #resilience #ElNiño
