@ESeveringhaus

I’ve been a broke entrepreneur, successful entrepreneur, and everything in between. Now I help other entrepreneurs prepare for, and avoid, some of my pitfalls.

1/ This is a love letter to the Midwest. Haters gonna hate. Lovers gonna love Growing up on the East Coast, I never thought much of the Midwest. I first visited Chicago in the summer 10 years ago & was in awe. Idk if there is a city more vibrant than Chicago in the summertime

@aaronwhoughton There's some axiom that as soon as a subjective measure starts being used externally, it loses value as a measure. It's so true.

This really brings into question all of the corporate mental wellness dashboards we’ve seen roll out in the last few years. If employees know their responses are being reviewed and impact management decisions then they will be influenced to respond differently. If, as this survey implies, they are lying about half the time, then what are we actually learning?
Sian Allen@DrSianAllen

If you monitor athlete wellness data, how do you ensure they're answering subjective questions honestly? A survey of 25 Sport Science & Medicine practitioners in Olympic/Paralympic sports found only 56% perceived athletes to be truthful in their monitoring responses... Some factors to be aware of that might influence reporting practices: 🔹 fear of inappropriate training decisions 🔹 poor engagement/buy-in to the monitoring process 🔹 coach & practitioner expectations to respond a certain way

@galeforceVC @galeforceVC - had someone recommend to me that anytime I discuss founder suicide, I reference the help hotline, 988. Thought I'd pass that suggestion along.

I just heard of two founders who recently took their lives, at least one because their startup was failing. 😢 Starting a company is hard…and mental health is a real thing we should talk more about. 🙏 reach out to someone if you need help. Sending everyone good energy. ✨

Thank you to @AldReilly for the commitment to a better Chicago for all. Great remarks tonight about the need to elect @EileenCookCnty for CCSA and important FACTS about why the transfer tax is not the right solution.

Idk who needs this but I’ve seen many startups fail because of founder burn out. I’ve never seen a startup fail because a founder took a couple of days off.

Just had a conversation with a founder about them shutting down their startup. They said, “I thought I could handle it all, but it felt like when my personal life was great, the business wasn’t… And when the business was great, my personal life wasn’t.” Mental health and finding balance is not an optional part of being a founder. Prioritize it.

The #1 thing founders expect you to do is care Maybe they don't always deserve it But at least pretend

@bluerssen I have lived this. Figured I'd be a pariah in Chicago after failure. A big part of why I wrote Scale Your Everest. @bluerssen - if I can be helpful to provide context to founder in question, pls don't hesitate to make an intro.

Dear Angel investor friends: I get that it can be frustrating when your startup investments don’t work out, but please refrain from sending emails to founders calling them a failure — especially when they’ve been pouring blood sweat and tears into a business for years. You’re out a small chunk of money; what do you think that founder is out? This happens to founders all the time, and it’s ridiculous. Be better.

@Chris_Deutsch I think most people define "angel" as an individual making their own investment decisions, regardless of investment stage. Just as VC funds invest at different stages based on risk tolerance and desired return, so do individuals. More capital for innovation is a good thing.

Ok rant time… IF YOU HAVE THE WORD *ANGEL* IN YOUR GROUP NAME THEN YOU HAVE TO INVEST IN THE 1ST ROUND If you call yourself angels but only invest in seed, A or later, then you MUST call yourself a distributed LP group Founders need 1st-check writers, not more fake angels 🤬

In my day, the AP history curriculum was full of right-wing nonsense but then a cool teacher would slip the good students a copy of “Lies My Teacher Told Me” or “A People’s History of the United States.”
