How do we judge our own conduct? In "The Theory of Moral Sentiments," Adam Smith argued that moral judgment arises through an impartial spectator. By viewing ourselves as others would, we learn to moderate passions, cultivate self-command, and develop a sense of duty. Building on Smith, Kristen Collins shows that the impartial spectator is not an abstract rule, but a socially formed standard. Moral judgment develops through interaction, habits, and institutions that shape how individuals learn to see themselves from others’ perspectives.

LibertyCon Europe has hosted talks by Nobel laureates, and as of yesterday also an Academy Award winning film. 🥂 Yesterday, the film "Mr. Nobody Against Putin", which we screened last April at LibertyCon in Prague, won the Oscar for best documentary feature.

March 16 marks the anniversary of one of the deadliest terrorist attacks carried out by Russia in Ukraine. On this day, a Russian aircraft dropped two powerful bombs, likely 500-kg, on the Mariupol Drama Theatre, where hundreds of civilians had taken shelter. The attackers were not stopped by the massive “CHILDREN” sign written on the square in front of the building to show that civilians were inside. Hundreds of people were killed while seeking refuge there, believing the theatre would never become a target.

Authoritarian populism is on the rise in Europe and beyond. In response, liberals should not lean into contrarianism or friend-enemy distinctions of their own. Instead, we need a positive and inclusive agenda, advancing freedom and prosperity of everyone.
