ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 1 APRIL 2026 CITY CONTACT CENTRE TOLL-FREE NUMBER BACK ONLINE EThekwini Municipality is pleased to inform residents that the City’s contact centre toll-free number 080 311 1111 , for electricity, water, and other essential services is now fully operational. This follows the resolution of technical challenges that affected the telephone line over the past few days. Residents and businesses can once again use the toll-free number to contact the relevant Municipal directorates for service-related queries and assistance. The Municipality apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks the public for their patience and understanding while the matter was being resolved. ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 31 MARCH 2026 UPDATE ON SOUTHERN AQUEDUCT SHUTDOWN The City wishes to inform the public that there have been delays in completing the Southern Aqueduct shutdown, which was scheduled for completion this morning. Technical teams are still on site attending to the pipeline works. Completion of the work is now anticipated later this evening, 31 March. Water supply restoration is expected to commence tomorrow, 1 April. EThekwini Municipality sincerely apologises for the unexpected delay and any inconvenience caused to affected residents and businesses. In a heart-warming gesture to support education and empower learners, the Waste Management Directorate, in collaboration with Toyota South Africa and Unilever, brought smiles to Siyathokoza Primary learners. The Directorate contributed educational supplies, including water bottles, pencil cases, rulers, and a selection of cosmetics generously sponsored by Unilever. A multi-disciplinary enforcement and compliance operation, led by Supply Side and Area-Based Operations Directorate, Region 08, is currently underway. The initiative involves multiple line directorates, including Durban Metro Police Services, South African Police Services (Phoenix, Verulam, Durban North, and Tongaat), Environmental Health, Business Licensing, Economic Development (Informal Trade), Fire Services, Building Inspectorate, Waste Management, South African Revenue Services (SARS) Customs, and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Labour. The primary objective of the operation is to restore order and enhance public safety within the northern region of eThekwini. During the operation, undocumented foreign nationals were identified, and non-compliant businesses were issued with fines and encouraged to regularise their operations by applying for the necessary business licences. Illicit goods were confiscated by South African Revenue Services Customs, while the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Labour conducted inspections to ensure adherence to labour legislation.
