Who doesn’t love a #DumboOctopus? This one was spotted during a 2019 dive on Kingman Ridges. Dumbos are known for having prominent ear-like fins that extend from the mantle above each eye. Did you know dumbo octopus refers to not one, but a whole genus of umbrella-armed species?

OET is proud of our major contributions to the global effort to map the seafloor. Thanks to combined efforts, the US continues to close mapping gaps on ocean, coastal, and Great Lakes waters, with only 44% left unmapped as of 2025. Read more: bit.ly/4dxEHlX

#GlassSponge skeletons are made up of tiny, sharp silica spicules that form geometric patterns, creating sculptural shapes. This structure makes it an excellent habitat for associates such as squat lobsters.

Over the years, while exploring the #deepsea, our Corps of Exploration has been fortunate enough to witness (and even sometimes sample) fossilized #sharkteeth from the deep seafloor. Many of these teeth belonged to the famous #Megalodon or its relatives.

Meet the #xenophyophore! Not to be confused with a rock; it is a single-celled organism with many nuclei within a single large cell. This organism extracts minerals from the seawater to form an intricate, rigid, agglutinated exoskeleton called a test.

While true jellyfish have stinging tentacles, their relatives, the ctenophores, use sticky cells to catch prey from the water. This ancient animal group has been swimming Earth's ocean for nearly 525 million years. Watch the video: youtube.com/watch?v=BGQNhQ…

While exploring the deep sea of the #CookIslands, we saw some sparkling #ctenophores. Also called #combjellies (thanks to rows of hair-like cilia), these invertebrates are known for their shimmering lights, sometimes due to #bioluminescence, but also reflecting surrounding light.
