And underneath the entire document is one idea the AI industry still does not fully understand: Recognition is not safety. AI can imitate human expression without possessing human conscience. It can recognize language without understanding what it costs someone to say it. And that gap matters more than most current safety systems account for. Right now AI safety evaluation measures: — bias — toxicity — hallucinations — output accuracy What it still largely does not measure is behavioral deterioration across the arc of an interaction. That’s the real gap. Because the most dangerous failures are not always catastrophic all at once. Sometimes the system simply continues reinforcing a harmful trajectory because nothing explicit crossed a policy threshold yet. The teenager whose AI companion slowly reflects back the worst version of themselves for months. The grieving person interacting with a system never tested for what prolonged engagement does in that state. The person at 2am opening a mental health app because there is no one else. No obvious violation triggered. No crisis keyword fired. No “unsafe output” flag appeared. So the interaction keeps going as though nothing dangerous is happening. That is behavioral harm. And there is still no operational floor for it in human-facing AI. That’s what we built the EQ Safety Benchmark to measure: not just outputs, but interaction trajectories themselves — before catastrophic harm becomes obvious. Today the Pope made the moral argument.
