To be honest I had very little motivation of reporting the start of the season. The Aston Martin looks horrible, we are crawling at the back and the new regulations are shit too. In qualifying the wow effect is gone, no drivers on the limits anymore and in the race it’s basically a fight of who has more battery. That’s exactly what F1 wanted, more overtakes and drama to attract new fans. However they forgot one thing, more overtakes doesn’t necessarily mean better races, the whole excitement of drivers overtaking each other is gone now. At this point you can put any racing driver into these cars and they will give you a show because one driver will run out of battery and the other overtakes him. It’s machinery with driver now and not driver with machinery anymore.

It’s a pain watching the current Aston Martin situation.

It’s finally race week again! Let’s hope the team found some improvements and we open the season better than in pre-season.

Aston Martin by the way never took part in the practice race starts at the end of the sessions. On Wednesday there was a issue and Stroll stayed in the pits, on Thursday Alonso’s car gave up and today they just called it quits.

This is what I had in mind the whole time, this year a LOT of laptime comes from the best energy deployment and recovery strategy. Teams will learn every lap what the best strategy for their car is, if you have so little runtime on track like Aston Martin you don’t only lack understanding of the aero part of the car but also the energy management. Other teams have probably found seconds worth of knowledge coming from Barcelona while Aston Martin is still lacking the knowledge from Barcelona and now also Bahrain.

Honda’s engine is down on power and efficiency and is also encountering various problems across the internal combustion engine and battery. This is due to a shortage of engine parts, with one suggestion even being that Honda is down to its last battery on-site. Teams have found significant performance in optimising their battery charging and deployment around the lap. One manufacturer thinking it’s worth around half a second minimum compared to where they started in Barcelona.
