Fox tried to build a franchise around Jean Grey twice. Lost $133 million on the second attempt. 22% on Rotten Tomatoes. Lowest opening in X-Men history.
Marvel's response: make her the center of the entire next saga.
Sadie Sink reportedly signed a 5-movie deal with TV show options. She debuts in Spider-Man: Brand New Day in July, appears in Secret Wars, then anchors the X-Men reboot that Jake Schreier is directing. The Mutant Saga lives or dies on whether audiences connect with her Jean Grey across a decade of films.
The bet makes sense when you look at what Fox actually got wrong. They told the Dark Phoenix story as a B-plot crammed into ensemble movies. Jean was passive in Last Stand and barely developed in Apocalypse before they asked audiences to care about her losing control. Marvel is doing the opposite: street-level introduction, government persecution arc, slow build across multiple franchises before the Phoenix Force ever enters the conversation.
The casting tells you everything about the timeline they're planning. Sink is 23. If the Mutant Saga runs 8 to 10 years, she'll be 33 at the climax. That's a full decade of character development before they attempt the story Fox rushed twice.
Hollywood's most expensive lesson in patience.
