The Trump phenomenon: why did half of America believe a liar? Many people keep asking the same question: how did Donald Trump come to power? Why did such massive support go to a man widely seen as uneducated, irresponsible, and narcissistically self-obsessed? Why did intelligence, competence, and experience suddenly carry so little political weight — and what does that say about democracy itself? • Populism always sells simple answers. Where experts talk about complexity, risks, and nuance, populists shout slogans. “Build the wall.” “Bring back greatness.” A slogan is always shorter than analysis — and therefore more effective for masses tired of thinking, or who never wanted to think deeply in the first place. • Emotion defeats argument. Trump, like every demagogue, spoke not to reason but to emotion. His rhetoric was built on anger, resentment, and fear. He created enemies, promised revenge, and avoided complicated explanations. Like many populists before him, he relied less on programs and more on outrage and emotionally charged narratives. • Simplicity becomes the language of the “common people.” Intellectuals almost always lose in mass politics. Complex language irritates people. Many feel uncomfortable when they do not understand something, but instead of admitting it, they blame the speaker. The person who speaks more simply is seen as “one of us.” • Confidence is mistaken for competence. Human nature has not changed. People still confuse decisiveness with wisdom and confidence with knowledge. Trump became a perfect example of the Dunning–Kruger effect: a man with limited understanding who presents himself as a genius. Yet this blind self-confidence is exactly what many voters perceive as strength. • Populists surround themselves with weaker people. Demagogues and authoritarian-minded leaders fear intelligent independent thinkers. That is why they often surround themselves with loyal but less competent figures. Trump’s first administration was partially restrained by institutional inertia and traditional Republicans. Later, many critics argued he increasingly preferred loyalists, conspiracy theorists, and ideological fanatics over experienced professionals. • History keeps repeating itself. A society searching for easy answers repeatedly opens the door to demagogues. Instead of embracing the difficult reality of democracy — compromise, institutions, responsibility — people choose the illusion of simplicity. They want a “strong leader” who supposedly “knows how” and will finally “tell the truth,” even if that truth is largely fiction. • Knowledge itself becomes a disadvantage. One of the paradoxes of modern politics is that intellect often appears weak. Thoughtfulness creates doubt, and doubt annoys people. The one who analyzes seems uncertain. The one who promises certainty sounds convincing. For many voters, appearance matters more than reality. The lesson is simple and brutal: democracy without thoughtful voters is only a shell. As long as large parts of society continue believing in easy answers to complex problems, the Trump phenomenon — or something very similar to it — will keep returning in different countries and under different faces. And every time, it comes with the same promise: “I alone can fix it.” That is why democracy requires more than voting. It requires thinking. Without that, anyone with a slogan can become your master.

Our Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine has obtained new Russian documents assessing the aggressor state’s losses from the war. Importantly, this is specifically a Russian internal assessment – one they are trying to conceal both from the world and from their own domestic audience. The first major indicator is a reduction in active oil wells. Just a single Russian oil company – and not even the largest one – has already been forced to shut down around 400 wells. Given the specifics of Russian oil production, these are significant losses, as restarting wells in Russia is far more difficult than in other oil-producing countries. The second indicator is a reduction in oil refining of at least 10% in just a few months this year alone. We see that our Ukrainian long-range sanctions are truly effective, and we will continue to scale up this line of our active actions. The data on the banking crisis in Russia is also quite convincing: 11 financial institutions are preparing for full liquidation due to problems that cannot be resolved by other means, while another eight banks have accumulated critical issues that cannot be addressed without external resources. This year’s federal budget deficit figures also look encouraging for us, standing at almost $80 billion by the fifth month of this year, alongside the bankruptcy of a significant number of Russian regional budgets. I have also instructed the Head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine, Oleh Luhovskyi, to share, in a format that does not compromise our sources, the obtained information on Russia’s attempts to involve global companies in resolving its financial hardship and in sanction-evasion schemes. In particular, we have recorded attempts to organize the export of grain from the temporarily occupied territory of Crimea – and, regrettably, other forms of economic exploitation of the peninsula involving entities from the United States. We will inform our partners. We are also recording attempts to bring investment and technology from democratic countries into Russia’s Arctic oil and gas projects. We know how to counter this. Thank you to everyone who helps us. Thank you to all our Ukrainian intelligence officers.

APPLEBAUM: Things changed. Ukrainians control frontline almost completely. It’s very difficult for Russians to advance. More Russians being killed every month than they able to recruit. Ukrainian long-range drones hitting big Russian targets. Putin’s regime become very paranoid.

It’s almost 4 a.m. I’m sitting on the bathroom floor while explosions keep tearing through Kyiv - one after another. Some are far away. Some are terrifyingly close. Your body stops reacting normally at some point. You just sit there listening, waiting, hoping your home survives the night. I’m so tired of nights that feel like hell. Tonight Kyiv is under nonstop attack. And honestly, no human being should live like this.

Vincent Bolloré is a public danger to France. By putting Xenia Fedorova, the former head of RT France, on CNEWS as a ”journalist,” he is officially doing Putin’s job. Bringing a Kremlin propagandist into the heart of French media is nothing short of traitorous

The U.S. remains engaged in the diplomatic process. It is clear that the war in Iran is now drawing the greatest attention from America and the U.S. President, but there is a priority there, as well as the support of the American people: to end this war in Europe too. It is Russia’s war that is having a global impact on technological change – on the fierce development of the technology of warfare itself. Because of this Russian aggression, killings have become more large-scale, and threats more dangerous – especially everything related to drones. Many partners understand this – 20 countries are already working with Ukraine at various levels to conclude Drone Deals with us. We have already reached political arrangements with some countries – contracts with manufacturers will follow, and our military expertise is already yielding results. We will soon sign political agreements with some other countries. We have also begun preparations for the Drone Deal with Canada. This is a very significant expansion of our security cooperation. Both on the American track and in Europe, we are doing our best so that we can produce enough anti-ballistic missiles here in Ukraine or jointly with partners. This is our constant task – additional missiles for air defense.

The damage from a reactionary Supreme Court: Citizens United allows billionaires to buy elections. Ending Roe v. Wade takes away a woman's right to control her body. Louisiana v. Callais strips voting rights away from Black Americans. Our rights are under attack. FIGHT BACK.

Hey friends💙💛 I wrote a book about the real Donbas. Not propaganda. Real life. Coal dust. Gray streets. Fear, silence, survival. And a war that began long before 2022. It’s the most personal thing I’ve ever written. A story about staying alive even when you feel already broken. buymeacoffee.com/angelica.shala…

As the world celebrates Victory in Europe Day, let us not forget how World War II began — with a deal. In 1939, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact. This agreement set the stage for the joint destruction of Europe. Hitler invaded Poland from the west, and Stalin followed from the east. The USSR then attacked Finland, annexed the Baltics, and seized territory from Romania. Between 1939 and 1941, the Soviets supplied Nazi Germany with oil, grain, and raw materials — fueling its conquest of Europe. Stalin was not Hitler’s victim. He was his partner in crime. Together, they ignited a war that would claim over 70 million lives. Truth matters more than propaganda.

Public sentiment in Russia continues to shift harshly against the war, with anti-war rants on social media going hugely viral. A Russian woman says that "Putin is pouring shit into your ears" and that anyone sending their son or husband to war is a moron

KASPAROV: May 9th Parade is sacred date in Russia. For Putin to admit that he should downgrade parade to "no more tanks" is already sign of weakness. But biggest challenge for Putin right now is that Moscow, St. Petersburg, other big cities starting to feel the heat of his war. Many oligarchs are also suffering serious financial losses because they own refineries and plants that Ukrainians are very successfully hitting almost every day.

I thank every state and leader who supported Ukraine’s proposal for a full ceasefire. Russia responded to it only with new strikes and attacks. Throughout the entire day, almost every hour, reports of strikes have been coming in from different regions of Ukraine. Ukraine will act in kind. Depending on the situation overnight and tomorrow, we will also determine our fully justified responses. Russia has received from us a clear proposal on silence of the guns and diplomacy – and knows how to contact Ukraine or our partners in order to coordinate the details. If the one person in Moscow who cannot live without war cares only about one parade and nothing else, that’s a different story. Ukraine is ready to work for peace. Ukraine seeks to end this war with dignity. Russia has fought to the point where even its main parade now depends on us. This is a clear signal: Enough is enough.

This may be one of Trump's most galling lies to date - and that's saying something. He tore down a third of the White House without approval from anyone and said he and his donors were paying for a luxury ballroom to be built -- and all of a sudden taxpayers are footing the bill for five times more than he said it would cost. #DonTheCon
