The Franklin Fire Department responded to three residential fires over the weekend, including two house fires that occurred simultaneously during severe weather Sunday night. On Sunday, March 15, firefighters battled two house fires at the same time while the area was experiencing severe weather that included heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, and a tornado warning. Both fires are believed to have been caused by lightning strikes. The first call on Sunday was at 10:06 PM for a fire at a 4,000-square-foot home on Medford Place in the Dallas Downs subdivision. After a lightning strike caused a power outage, the occupants noticed smoke in the residence and called 911. Additional calls from neighbors reported the fire, and there were conflicting reports about whether anyone was still inside the home. Firefighters conducted a search and confirmed that the occupants had made it out safely. The home, valued at approximately $1.2 million, is considered a total loss. According to Franklin Fire Marshal Andy King, a pet cat that was reported missing overnight was located safely the following morning. The occupants are being assisted by a neighbor. Approximately one hour later at 11:08 PM, while crews were still operating at the first fire, Franklin Fire Department units were dispatched to a second house fire on Stoney Point Lane in the Ashton Park subdivision. The fire involved a 3,500-square-foot home and is also believed to have been caused by a lightning strike. According to King, a family of three was home with their two pets when an apparent lightning strike hit their home. After investigating, the residents saw fire on the roof and called 911. Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control, but the lightning strike caused significant damage to the upper portion of the structure. King estimated the damage at approximately $50,000. Earlier in the weekend, firefighters responded to a house fire on Saturday evening in the Villages of Clovercroft. The fire occurred at a two-story home of approximately 3,600 square feet on Lena Lane. According to King, the fire began when a propane grill being used on the backyard patio ignited leaves and yard debris near the home. The homeowners believed they had extinguished the fire, but it continued to spread through mulch and entered the home through a crawl space vent. Later in the evening, the residents noticed smoke inside the home and flames underneath the structure. Firefighters contained the fire to the crawl space beneath the house. The fire damaged some structural members and insulation in the crawl space, but crews ensured the fire was fully extinguished and assisted with smoke ventilation. The residents were able to remain in their home. No injuries were reported in any of the incidents. The Franklin Fire Department reminds residents to always call 911 if a fire occurs, even if you believe it has been extinguished. You should also call 911 if you are unsure whether a fire or other hazard may be present. Firefighters use thermal imaging cameras to check for hidden heat and fire extension that may be burning inside walls, insulation, or other concealed spaces within the home. Thank you to @WKRN News 2, including Marcus Bagwell, Jamie Vaughan, and the entire News 2 Gives Back team, for stopping by Franklin Fire Station 6 today to provide lunch and honor the legacy of retired Franklin Fire Captain Bill Almon. Captain Almon, who worked at Station 6, retired last year after 27 years of dedicated service to the Franklin community. He passed away in January following a courageous battle with brain cancer. The News 2 Gives Back team visited Station 6 to share a meal with firefighters and Captain Almon’s family members. While there, Meteorologist Marcus Bagwell spoke with Franklin Fire Captain Dustin Anderson and Captain Almon’s brother, Joey Almon, Assistant Fire Marshal of the Nashville Fire Department, about Captain Almon’s legacy and the impact he made on those who served alongside him. News 2 Gives Back is made possible through a partnership with Twice Daily, with lunch provided by Rippy’s Bar & Grill. We are grateful to everyone who helped honor Captain Almon and his service to the Franklin community. Watch the interview here: bit.ly/47F6H33

Spring forward with safety in mind! When you change your clocks this weekend, take a few minutes to make sure the items you rely on during emergencies and power outages are charged, have fresh batteries, and are ready to go. The time change is also a great reminder to check your smoke alarms and make sure your home has adequate protection. Smoke Alarm Safety Tips: • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (such as hallways), and on each level of your home, including the basement. • Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. • Change smoke alarm batteries once a year or when they do not respond properly when tested. • Replace all smoke alarms every 10 years. The Franklin Fire Department extinguished a duplex fire on Green Street late this morning. Firefighters were dispatched at 11:22 AM to the two-story structure and arrived to find smoke showing from the eaves, with the attic fully involved in fire. Crews quickly initiated fire suppression efforts and were able to contain the fire primarily to the attic space where it originated, preventing it from spreading beyond the unit of origin. The duplex attic was separated by a fire wall, which also helped prevent fire damage to the adjoining unit. According to Franklin Deputy Fire Marshal Will Farris, an HVAC technician working with acetylene equipment in the attic reported an equipment failure that resulted in a flash fire that spread through the attic. No injuries were reported. The duplex has two separate owners. The damaged unit was being used as a short-term rental property. The adjoining unit did not sustain fire damage and remains livable. Farris said firefighters cut a ventilation hole in the roof during suppression operations, and the roof will need to be repaired. There was also minor fire and smoke damage to a second-floor room beneath the attic in the affected unit. He estimated damage at $100,000.

The Franklin Fire Department extinguished a vehicle fire Friday night in a multi-level parking structure built within and fully surrounded by a four-story apartment building at the McEwen Northside Apartments. Firefighters were dispatched at 10:52 PM to 4015 Aspen Grove Drive following a commercial fire alarm activation. While enroute, 911 callers reported smoke and a vehicle on fire on the third level of the parking garage, prompting the response to be upgraded to a commercial structure fire. Access to the garage is limited to the rear of the property, requiring crews to operate within a confined, multi-level environment. Upon arrival, firefighters found a 2015 Honda Odyssey van on fire on the third floor of the parking garage. The building’s automatic sprinkler system activated and helped contain the fire, preventing extension to other vehicles, the parking structure, and the adjacent apartment building. Firefighters advanced handlines and utilized the standpipe system to supply water to the upper levels of the garage and complete extinguishment. No injuries were reported, and the parking structure and apartment building sustained no damage. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
