@igordownunder It is tricky. Cheaper for students who often don't mind sharing rooms to reduce costs, and arguably more valuable for them to get the experience and exposure. That said, a good face to face conversation can lead to ideas for funding that can recover the expenses many times over.

Full conference registrations now surpassing 1000 USD. thats lots of $$$. combined with flights + accomodation, a conference costs around 5k. thats lots for a 30 min talk and a few corridor conversations. what do we all do about it? #AcademicTwitter ?

Di was a wonderful supporter & advocate for women in science. She supported me when I travelled to Paris for the L’Oreal-UNESCO women in science laureate awards. She continued to mentor me and many other scientists with empathy &understanding of the enormous challenges. RIP

Saddened that Di McCarthy has passed away. she was my deputy dean with us was medical dean then CE of the Royal Society of NZ - a real enthusiast for science and a great friend. The last year has been very difficult for her but it is a great loss.

I've found some interesting photos from a 1989 quantum optics conference in New Zealand! Here's one from the poster session - before we had A0 printers, you'd basically summarise a paper on A4 sheets (sometimes handwritten) and just pin them up and talk about them!
