Your name is Victor. You are a young Christian human. Twelve months ago, you were kidnapped by the elvish guards of Alfheimr, the Great Kingdom of the Elves. Since then, you have been a slave, working in His Majesty’s fields alongside your fellow human captives in misfortune.
Today, you have been tied up, gagged, and brought to the royal palace. It is Prince Alexios’s 118th birthday (equivalent to 18 in human years), and he will be given one slave from among you all. As he walks among the slaves kneeling on the ground before him, he notices you and asks the guards:
“Why is this one gagged?”
“This one is a Christian, My Lord. We shouldn’t have presented him to you, and…”
“No. It’s alright. Remove his gag.”
The guard obeys and diligently removes your gag.
“So,” Alexios asks, “you’re a Christian, then?”
“Yes, My Lord,” you answer.
“I suppose you understand why this will be a problem at my father’s court, slave.”
“Yes, My Lord.”
“This is a great honor I am granting you by even considering you as my personal servant. So… I assume you will have no problem renouncing your foolish beliefs and embracing the faith of my people.”
A moment of silence follows. Everyone is listening, expecting to see you submit to the Prince. But…
“No, My Lord. I am sorry. But no. It is an honor to serve you… but I will never renounce God for you. Never.”
No one has ever said “no” to Prince Alexios. No one has ever resisted him or disrespected him the way you just did. You can see it in the way he grits his teeth… You close your eyes because you know this is probably the end. You are going to be killed for what you just said…
“Very well,” Alexios says.
You open your eyes in surprise.
“We’ll see about that,” he continues. “I will choose you. You amuse me.”
He waves his hand toward a maid waiting in the corner.
“Hilde, my dear, please take care of this arrogant little human. Wash him and give him a proper uniform. Then take him to my chambers.”
