@JamesSurowiecki It was the only way to apply the 3/5 compromise to the election of President and Vice President. It has outlived its purpose.

There's no good civic argument for the electoral college. It was arguably necessary to ensure the ratification of the Constitution, but it's an anti-democratic device that gives some American citizens far more voting power than others, based purely on where they live.

NEWS -- A senior Trump administration official said that U.S. intelligence "had indicators" that the Iranians were going to use their missiles "preemptively, but if not, simultaneous" to any American action on Iran. The Gang of Eight was briefed on this, as @AndrewDesiderio reported in our special edition this morning. "The president decided he was not going to sit back and allow American forces in the region to absorb attacks from conventional missiles. We had analysis that basically told us, if we sat back and waited to get hit first, the amount of casualties and damage would be substantially higher than if we acted in a preemptive, defensive way to prevent those launches from occurring."

To get the Danes' side of the story, I next read The Wolf Age: The Vikings, the Anglo-Saxons and the battle for the North Sea Empire by Tore Skeie. If you are interested in that time period, I can't recommend this one enough.
