Classical Architecture in Minecraft: Doric Column and entasis Haya fellows, in this post, I’ll finish up the lesson about Doric order by introducing the last crucial part of it: the column. As other parts, the Doric column also follows the rule of tripartition, meaning it is also divided into three main parts: the capital at the top, the shaft in the middle, and the base at the bottom. The column’s capital also has three main parts: the abacus at the top, which is always a square in 3D shape; you can’t really see this in a 2D drawing, but you will see it very clearly in real buildings. A canonized abacus has a fillet on top, following with a cyma reversa (check my old posts if you don’t know what these are). Below the abacus is the echinus, a band with an ovolo shape. Finally, at the bottom of the capital is the necking. The necking has a reversed congé (or apophyge) at the top and then a straight line that aligns with the outer axis of the column and the frieze. A congé (or apophyge) is a small, concave, outward curve on a classical column. Entasis (or sometimes called diminution) refers to to a subtle curve running slightly smaller toward the top of the column and sometimes also becoming smaller toward the base. There are two main ways in which entasis can be drawn. According to Vignola (1507-1573), the column is divided into three equal parts, and then the diminution starts from the second part of the division on. Meanwhile, Serlio (1475 – c. 1554) suggested curving outward from the point of 1/3 slightly to the base and more intensely toward the top of the column, making the widest part of the column the top of the 1/3. Entasis is created from a belief that our pulvinated eyes perceive a straight column as slightly curved, so entasis was born to fix the optical illusion. On the top of the shaft we can see a round band called an astragal. Astragal is actually not separable from bead; they can be used interchangeably most of the time. Around the shaft you can see the channels slightly curving inward; there are 20 of them in total, and the peak between each channel is called an arris. Each of the channels spans 18 degrees. Hitting the bedrock of the column is the base. A Doric column can sometimes omit the base, but if it has, there are several options to choose from. One is a normal Doric base, which consists of a fillet on top of a bead, followed by a torus and a big plinth. The second is an attic base that consists of two toruses with a scotia (hollow concave molding) in the middle alongside fillets. When applying this into Minecraft, I don’t generally bulge the base out because it doesn’t really go against my philosophy of subtlety, so I normally just use another material to make a separation in color. The capital is quite obvious; I don’t have that many options in Minecraft, so I just put upside-down stairs up there. The good news is that I can do a subtle entasis in my building approach using a debugged wall to create a tiny curve toward the capital, which can hardly be achieved with this amount of delicacy in other methods. Also, you might want to download Krista's better wall texture pack for full effect. That is it for this post. By now I have shared almost all the basics about my building technique, so from now on I’ll lessen the academic load of the content and get more practical into how to actually build classical architecture in Minecraft. If you are interested, do follow for more classical architecture and Minecraft content! #Minecraft #MinecraftBuilds #MinecraftServer
