As the media industry faces a period of turmoil, Evan Shapiro says he is "optimistic" about its future. "The creator economy, this podcast stuff that's made by artists and delivered direct to consumers, that's where the industry is all headed," he told PBS News' Geoff Bennett. "It is not headed back to Hollywood. It is not headed to these big studio systems." "I'm not worried about the ability for individual creators to build enterprises around themselves that don't necessarily need 100 million subscribers to succeed," he later added. "That's going to grow, that's going to thrive. So I'm optimistic about the media because I know the consumers are driving it." Shapiro, the so-called "Media Universe Cartographer," spoke to @GeoffRBennett for the latest episode of PBS News' podcast, "Settle In." He discussed the challenges facing the media and entertainment industry and its future.

A year ago this week, Ruben Ray Martinez, a 23-year-old U.S. citizen, was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Texas. But it was not until this past February, 11 months after the shooting, that ICE confirmed its involvement. It's now become the first publicly known instance of ICE fatally shooting a U.S. citizen as part of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. While the Department of Homeland Security says Martinez intentionally rammed his vehicle into an agent, recently released body cam footage — which shows shots being fired into Martinez's vehicle — calls that narrative into question. And one year later, Martinez's family is still searching for answers. @GeoffRBennett spoke with Ruben Martinez's mother, Rachel Reyes, and her attorney, Charles Stam.
