Man at bus stop seeing me, a wheelchair user: “I don’t have time to wait for a wheelchair to get on.” Wheelchair users know about waiting.The resistance to us riding buses kept them inaccessible for years. Your wait is minimal. Our wait for access persists.

Although excluding disabled people is often the status quo, it is not a neutral act. Excluding disabled people is a hostile act.

Access is not something you bestow upon disabled people. Access is not a gift. Providing access to disabled people is righting a wrong. It is righting the wrong of exclusion.

It is 2026. There is simply no excuse for new construction that excludes disabled people.

Ableism is more than treating disabled people differently. It is discrimination, devaluation and dehumanization of disabled people. Disabled people have value. Disabled people have merit. Disabled people are worthy. Disabled people are not a burden.

Disability is sometimes a challenge. Disability is not inferiority.

Access for disabled people is not a privilege. It is a right.

The lack of access for disabled people is not an inconvenience. Exclusion is not an inconvenience. Segregation is not an inconvenience. Trauma is not an inconvenience.

This woman was for all intents & purposes kidnapped & is being held against her will. I am also having a swirl of emotions reading this article bc when the hospital attempted to do this to me in BC, Canada, not even the Disability Alliance BC felt I had a right to object.
