We’re pleased to announce that Professor Pushpinder Mangat has been appointed as our new Medical Director and Director of Education and Standards. From his experiences as a registered doctor and the Deputy Chief Medical Officer in Wales, Push brings with him a wealth of expertise. We look forward to welcoming him next year, where he’ll work closely with Professor Colin Melville on the run up to his retirement in June. Hello. The erasure decision is still available on the doctor’s record on the register. The suspension decision was removed five years after the date the doctor left the register, in line with our publication and disclosure policy. You can read the policy on our website - gmc-uk.org/-/media/docume…. You can also read more information about the case in this summary on our website - gmc-uk.org/-/media/docume…

Registration for physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs) is open. To all PAs and AAs – we’re looking forward to welcoming you. If you’re on a voluntary register, you don’t need to apply until we invite you in January, but you can start preparing your documents. If you’re not on a voluntary register, we encourage you to apply as soon as you’re able. Regulation will have a positive impact and help to strengthen patient safety. You can find more information about how we’ll register PAs and AAs on our website - gmc-uk.org/about/what-we-…

@gmcuk FFS, the correct English verb is "practising"; practice is the noun. You know, as in "licence to practise". Perhaps the author of this tweet was educated abroad, or simply paid little attention at school during English classes?

Last year saw an increase in the number of doctors practicing in the UK, with more than two thirds of those joining the register having qualified abroad. This means that many doctors will not only be adjusting to UK practice, but also navigating a new life in a new country. We continue to run free workshops for doctors new to the UK, offering practical guidance on ethical scenarios and the chance to connect with other internationally-qualified doctors. Last year, more than 10,500 international medical graduates attended a session. Concerted, sustained efforts are needed across the UK’s healthcare systems to provide the induction, integration and inclusion vital for those new to working as a doctor in the UK. @gmcuk Is the report available as a Word Doc ? PDF not compatible with all screen readers. Is it available in Easy Read for those with cognitive impairments? Is it available as BSL? You have to make reasonable adjustment under the Equality Act.

Today, we’ve published a report on the outcome of our public consultation on the proposed rules, standards and guidance that we’ll use to implement the regulation of physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs). The report: - details the key changes we have made as a result of the feedback received - provides a comprehensive breakdown of all responses - addresses a range of broader issues raised during the consultation. We’ve also shared our findings with relevant bodies across the system to encourage them to act on feedback that relates to their areas of responsibility. We’re grateful to the over 3,000 individuals, including doctors, patients, the public, PAs and AAs and organisations from across the four countries of the UK who shared their views. We carefully considered all feedback, and this will help to make sure that our approach to regulation supports patient safety. The final rules, standards and guidance will be approved by our Council before regulation begins. Read the full report on our website gmc-uk.org/about/get-invo…

This week, we've written to leaders across the healthcare system about our preparations to regulate physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs). This includes information about how we’ve worked with organisations representing patients, doctors, PAs, AAs, employers and educators to develop our approach. Hi @drmattuk and @Mike88881221 like most organisations we reflect on social media posts we’ve been tagged in, or those which are receiving high levels of interest. This helps us identify topics or issues to communicate with our audiences – whether that’s via social media or other communication channels. We consider public social media posts alongside a range of other sources of feedback, such as the insights we hear from our conversations with doctors, medical students, patients and our partners in healthcare.

Did you know? @gmcuk employs social media specialists to monitor criticisms and shape their strategy. The extent of this is outrageously far-reaching. Thanks to @Mike88881221 for uncovering this through FOI. If I’ve tagged you, the GMC has been tracking you. Congratulations?

We're pleased to share the second in our annual series of #StateOfMed reports – Workforce. This focuses on the changing shape of the medical workforce across the UK. This year’s report shows that the medical register continues to grow, as does the diversity of the doctors on it. Doctors’ career paths are also changing, with more doctors than ever before choosing locally employed (LE) roles, working outside of formal postgraduate training pathways and with local contracts. In England and Wales, where data is currently available to us, the number of LE doctors grew by 75% between 2019 and 2023 – this makes this the fastest growing cohort on the register. As we look to the next decade, it’s critical that all doctors have the infrastructure, support and resources they need to achieve their ambitions. That’s in the interests of doctors, as well as the interests of a growing and ageing population. Discover more insights and key statistics by reading the report on our website gmc-uk.org/-/media/docume…

Today, we’re proudly paying tribute to our former chair, Dame Clare Marx. Dame Clare made history as the first woman to chair the GMC since we were established in 1858. Her visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to the healthcare profession has left a profound legacy. Though Dame Clare died two years ago, her influence continues to inspire and shape our work, and will have a lasting impact on healthcare services for years to come. You can read more about Dame Clare’s fantastic work on our blog gmcuk.wordpress.com/2024/11/26/rem…

Over the coming weeks, we’re reminding all physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates (AAs) that registration will open on 16 December 2024. PAs and AAs on the voluntary registers will be invited to apply for registration by the end of January 2025. We're encouraging PAs and AAs not on the voluntary registers to apply as soon as they can from 16 December 2024. You can find all the latest information on how we’re preparing to regulate PAs and AAs on our 'Getting ready for regulation' webpages gmc-uk.org/pa-and-aa-regu…

Yesterday, we welcomed healthcare leaders to our first Dame Clare Marx memorial lecture. Dame Clare was an inspiration to all of us at the GMC, and it was wonderful to see so many people come together to reflect on her legacy. Attendees heard from Dr Amanda Brown who spoke about treating all patients with compassion – something Dame Clare was deeply committed to. Dr Brown shared her incredible journey from being a GP to working with prisoners at Wormwood Scrubs and Bronzefield. A huge thank you to everyone who attended and made this event so special.
