The motto I live by: There is always something you can teach There is always something you can learn (probably said by someone famous/clever, but I don't know who)

@XrpGm The problem is that the clutch was completely toast. No matter what gear I was in there was no power to the output shaft.

@HammerToe I know the feeling. If you can get over the crest you can change gears still without the clutch.

Dammit. Of all the place to break down. Literally right between England and Wales on the bridge. FFS. Clutch has gone. Engine going but no power reaching the wheels. Clutch smelling burnt. Annoyingly almost made it over the crest and would have been able to roll to Wales

Now, why it is burned out, I don't know. Either the engine seal has broken and it has got oil in it, or part of the linkage or mechanism for pushing the clutch plate together has broken. Neither of which are going to be things I can fix by the side of the road. Regardless of what the cause is, if there isn't any friction in the clutch, then the output shaft is not going to turn. Doesn't matter if you start it in 1st gear or whatever.

OK, I'm going to hold your hand when I say this... if the clutch is blown, there is no friction between the clutch plates. They have burnt out. That is what the smell is. It doesn't matter what gear you are in, the engine is spinning and input to the clutch is turning, but not the output. It doesn't matter what gear I am in.

@DaveWall61 How would you suggest I replace a clutch on the side of a motorway, on a bridge, about 35 meters in the air?

@HammerToe Never mind it's to late for you now. Thats why we pay for breakdown recovery these days. No one knows basically how a car works

These absolutely insane LLM wizards are now experimenting with Turboquant not just to compress KV cache, but now, the entire model itself. This test showed a >50% reduction in memory footprint, allowing for Qwen 3.5-27B to be run on a single RTX 5060 @ 3.15bit precision - with no apparent degradation. This just goes to show that we're likely nowhere near full optimization for existing models. We are likely <1yr away from running big models on smol devices with minimal consequence. And during that time, they will only get better and better. What a time to be alive.
Markets & Mayhem@Mayhem4Markets

TurboQuant is looking pretty solid. 🔥 > Original idea was to use it just for KV cache where context tokens are stored > Now it is expanding to be used with models > On Qwen 3.5-27B it shrinks the model down to 12.9B > 6X memory savings vs 16-bit precision > Stays accurate

@mostlyfarming @NeilMcCoyWard Fuel is heavy, and so planes only fly with enough fuel (plus reserve) for the flight they are doing. Most aircraft cannot actually land with much fuel in the tanks as it would be too heavy to land. Hence why aircraft will jettison fuel in an emergency before landing.

The last known jet fuel shipment from the Middle East bound for the UK is due to dock on Thursday. One ship. The Libyan-flagged Maetiga, loaded with jet fuel from Saudi Arabia, currently off the coast of Portugal. After that there are currently no other UK-bound cargoes from the region visible on the water. The UK phased out Russian jet fuel supplies and replaced them with fuel routed through the Strait of Hormuz. That route is now effectively closed. Europe sources around 40% of its jet fuel through the Hormuz chokepoint. The UK is particularly exposed, both directly and through imports routed via the Netherlands and Belgium. The maths on this is simple. If that ship docks Thursday and nothing follows, airlines have weeks not months before this becomes their problem. The UK government has told travellers not to worry yet. That is usually the moment to start doing something. Follow me to stay informed

@Dark_horse Lol this was a 2004 Citroen Berlingo bought for about £2,500 for my daughter to turn into a campervan. It has been good so far, and a new clutch will double its value lol

@HammerToe In that case you could still have driven it. I once drove home to Doncaster from Leeds. Old Vauxhall Viva after the clutch went also had a Nissen sunny had to have a couple of new clutches. Still driveable without the clutch 🫡

I almost made it over the crest of the bridge and then would at least have been able to coast off the motorway.
