It's not just sad - it's sickening. The very fact that child marriage is still permitted, let alone practised, in Iraq in the 21st century is a stain on any claim the country has to modernity, human rights, or civilised governance. These aren't marriages. They're state-sanctioned child abuse. Let's call it what it is: paedophilia given religious or cultural cover. A 12-year-old cannot consent to marriage. She cannot understand it, cannot escape it, and cannot protect herself from what comes next. And yet under Iraq's existing laws - and in some cases with proposals backed by Islamist parties - girls as young as nine can be legally forced into marriage under "Sharia-compliant" frameworks. Where are the so-called feminists in the West? Where are the human rights campaigners? They'll scream blue murder over a pronoun but fall deathly silent when little girls in Baghdad are married off to men three times their age. Why? Because criticising Islamic norms, even when they trample over children's lives, is now seen as "Islamophobic." This isn't just Iraq's shame. It's a global failure of moral clarity, fuelled by cowardice, relativism, and ideological double standards. And the longer the West tiptoes around these abuses in the name of tolerance, the more girls will be sacrificed on the altar of political correctness.
