Trust is the real bottleneck for robotics. We have been building them for decades: industrial arms, drones, AMRs, delivery bots. The real challenge today isn't building robots, it's getting people to accept them into their lives, workplaces, and homes. Curious where public trust actually stands? @HexagonAB surveyed 18,000 people across nine countries to find out: hexagon.com/robotics/the-r… So, what did they find? The top concern isn't job loss. It's security. Over half of respondents worry robots could be hacked or misused. And the pattern is consistent: trust rises where robots are visible, bounded, and understood, in factories and warehouses. It falls where they feel abstract or uncontrolled, like in the home. Geography tells the same story. The UK, where robot exposure in daily life is low, ranks as the most anxious nation. South Korea, where robots are integrated into everyday environments, is among the least worried. China, where delivery and service robots are commonplace, shows some of the highest optimism. Hexagon Robotics is working on both sides of this equation, developing the sensing, measurement, and autonomy that makes robots reliable, while the data from surveys like this one shapes how the industry communicates purpose, safety, and control. The path to adoption runs through trust. And trust is built through visibility, governance, and clarity of purpose. How worried are we about robots? 👀 Let’s take a look at the @HexagonAB survey, and find out! Hexagon surveyed 18,000 people across nine countries to understand public attitudes toward robots, and the results reveal a clear trust gap. The UK is most worried about robots. South Korea the least. 🌍 At the top of the “robot anxiety” ranking is the UK, where 52% of adults say they worry something might go wrong with robots. At the lower end of the scale, South Korea is at 29%. Anxiety tends to be highest in countries where robots are least visible in everyday life. British adults report relatively low real-world exposure to robots. In contrast, Chinese respondents are among the most likely to have seen or interacted with robots, and are also among the most optimistic about their potential. Interestingly, the top concern isn’t job loss. It’s security. According to the survey: → 51% worry robots could be hacked or misused → 41% worry robots might malfunction and cause harm → 41% fear job replacement → 31% worry robots will make humans less capable → 26% say they simply don’t trust robots as much as people The trust pattern is consistent. People are more comfortable with robots in industrial or workplace settings, where rules, oversight, and benefits are clear. Trust declines in personal environments, especially homes, where control, privacy, and safety feel less defined. It’s all about governance, cybersecurity, and clarity of purpose. Where robots are visible, bounded, and understood, trust increases. Where they feel abstract or uncontrolled, anxiety grows. This helps explain global differences: in China, public exposure to delivery, cleaning, and service robots normalises them, while in the UK, limited visibility keeps robots theoretical and easier to fear. The bottleneck for robotics adoption may not be technology anymore.
