An investigative report by Al Jazeera Arabic titled “The Rest of the Story” documented at least 2,842 Palestinians who have been killed in Gaza with no recoverable bodies or remains after Israeli strikes since October 2023. The investigation is based on records from Gaza’s civil defence teams, medical workers, and families, who describe entire households disappearing in single strikes, with nothing left behind but dust, fragments, or scorched personal belongings. In these cases, the dead are identified through pre-strike residency records rather than physical remains, exposing a devastating category of loss that falls outside conventional casualty counts.
The report links these disappearances to high-intensity munitions that combine extreme heat with immense pressure, particularly in enclosed or densely built areas. Specialists cited explain that such weapons can incinerate human bodies almost entirely, effectively erasing physical evidence of those killed. The findings have intensified scrutiny of Israel’s conduct in Gaza and the humanitarian toll on civilians, raising serious questions about accountability, the use of such weapons in populated areas, and the enduring trauma faced by families denied even the most basic act of mourning or burial.
