Arsenal playing basketball. Chelsea asking why they're not. That's not a fever dream. That's the trajectory, if it's managed correctly. That's what I argued to @arbarkas on the new episode of The Crossover. 🎙️ youtu.be/lDJ3ty6SCfc

This could become THE most significant moment in sports business history. And there's an equally plausible scenario where it fractures basketball right down the middle globally. That's what makes this unlike anything we've seen before. More on EP02 of @nbaeuropepod.

@TDemacro I think that’s a play over time. To make the product premium, you’d need non-Brits. Then over time pipelines would be built to produce players.

@Hodgeythehack Hi Stuart, do you think if London or Manchster were to get a franchise we would see many Brits make the rosters? I would much rather see some domestic players and not just an imported roster.

April 28 is the date everyone needs in their diary. No formal bilateral in Istanbul but both Chus Bueno and George Aivazoglou in the same building tells you everything about where this is heading.
Davide Chinellato@dchinellato

#Euroleague CEO Chus Bueno and #NBA EME managing director George Aivazoglou will both be in attendance tomorrow at Fenerbahce v Real Madrid but no formal meeting has been scheduled, per sources. NBA, FIBA and Euroleague will formally meet on April 28 More soon on @Gazzetta_it

And that's before you factor in what happens when the NBA lands in Europe. The asset class doesn't just grow. It multiplies. New franchises, new markets, new media rights cycles. Apollo aren't wrong about the underfinancing – but I'd argue they're looking at the current map, not the one that's coming. Worth reading alongside everything happening with the NBA's European expansion.
The Icahnist@TheIcahnist

Sports might be the most underfinanced $2.5 trillion asset class in the world. Apollo published a white paper on sports investing. Thread

Massive statement from @EuroLeague chief Chus Bueno on LinkedIn: - EuroLeague BOD has greenlit a franchise model transition and market expansion plan - He explicitly endorses NBA-EuroLeague partnership talks – not just openness, but active advocacy - He mentioned how fragmentation dilutes value for everyone – clubs, media, sponsors, fans Another big story shift. We will dive right into it on Ep 2 of @nbaeuropepod early next week.

"We've got to go to couples therapy." Giannis said it himself. When your best player is using that language publicly, the divorce is already happening. The paperwork's just not been filed yet. Full piece for @SkySports 👇 skysports.com/nba/news/36226…

The closed franchise model is the fault line that keeps coming up – and rightly so. European fans don't do "relegated to nothing." But the NBA knows this. The real question is whether they've actually designed around it or whether they're just hoping the product is good enough that nobody cares. History suggests that's a gamble – but the NBA don't go after something unless they mean business.
ValueBetFactory@ValueBetFactory

NBA Europe just crossed its first major milestone. Bid deadline passed Tuesday. 120+ investor groups responded. Multiple bids at $1 billion per franchise. Most falling between $500M and $1B. PSG, Real Madrid, AC Milan, sovereign wealth funds. All in. Target: 14-16 teams across 12 European cities. London, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Athens on the list. Launch: fall 2027. Silver’s message to investors: “People looking for a short return should look elsewhere.” But we’re skeptical. A closed franchise model with $1B entry fees is the opposite of European sports culture. Promotion and relegation is in European DNA. And the cities? London and Rome don’t breathe basketball. You’re not building a culture from scratch with a TV product. You need fans in arenas, local identity, organic rivalries. That said, if it launches, the betting market implications are massive. A fully regulated NBA-backed league across every major European market means a whole new ecosystem of value opportunities. Euroleague is watching. Closely.

From legal threats to franchise bids. In weeks. The EuroLeague changed tack – and the investor list that's come out explains exactly why. Saudi PIF. QSI. RedBird vs Oaktree in Milan. Some Luka Magic in Rome! Quite the list. 🎙️ The Crossover: NBA Europe

Gordon's take on NBA Europe is probably the most grounded you'll hear from a player who's actually lived this game at the sharp end. No hype, no agenda – just a guy who knows European basketball inside out and can see the broadcast gap for what it is. That point about American TV coverage is the crux of the entire commercial argument, and it doesn't get said nearly enough.

🔗 @canbedell
