#OTD in 1944, Nazi Germany invaded Hungary—home to the largest remaining Jewish population in Europe at the time. Even as Allied forces closed in, the Germans and their collaborators murdered about 500,000 Jews in Hungary in just one year. Photo: Yad Vashem encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/art…

In March 1943, Bulgarian authorities forced Thracian Jews from their homes, boarded them onto trains, and then onto ships to Vienna. There, they were put on trains bound for the Treblinka killing center, where they were murdered after a 1,000-mile journey. Words matter. The mainstreaming of antisemitic rhetoric has dangerous real world consequences. Today's attack on a Michigan synagogue is yet another in a string of examples. Allowing anti-Jewish hatred to go unchecked harms Jews and is a threat to all of society.

Future US President Dwight D. Eisenhower was forever changed by the horrors he witnessed at Ohrdruf concentration camp in April 1945. He became determined to preserve evidence of the brutality and share the truth of Nazi crimes with the world. #America250 📷: National Archives

#OTD in 1945, Soviet forces liberated the Gross-Rosen main camp. It is estimated that of the 120,000 prisoners who passed through the Gross-Rosen camp system, at least 40,000 died either in Gross-Rosen or during the evacuation of the camp. Photo: Instytut Pamiȩci Narodowej

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, as Holocaust denial and violent antisemitism surge globally, its lessons about why our choices matter have never been more urgent. Yet the abuse and exploitation of Holocaust memory have become alarmingly commonplace. It must stop. ushmm.org/information/pr…

#OTD 81 years ago, Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet troops. The Germans established the Auschwitz camp complex in the spring of 1940 in German-occupied Poland. About 1.1 million people were killed there, including about one million Jews. #HolocaustRemembranceDay

Anne Frank was targeted and murdered solely because she was Jewish. Leaders making false equivalencies to her experience for political purposes is never acceptable. Despite tensions in Minneapolis, exploiting the Holocaust is deeply offensive, especially as antisemitism surges.

The arson attack on Mississippi’s largest synagogue is yet another vile attack against the Jewish people and American society as a whole. It must be universally condemned. We stand with the Jackson community and thank law enforcement for swiftly apprehending a suspect.

There’s a good reason the US and dozens of other countries and cities have adopted the IHRA definition of antisemitism. When leaders move to revoke it, like what happened today in New York, it should alarm everyone—especially as violence against Jews is dangerously escalating.

At 13 years old, Steven Fenves found a way to survive at Auschwitz. He joined the resistance, served as an interpreter, and survived a death march before being liberated by American soldiers. Years later, Steven shared his story with visitors from around the world at our Museum. ushmm.org/remember/holoc…

#OTD in 1944, the US Army Air Forces bombed the I. G. Farben synthetic oil and rubber (Buna) factories—less than five miles from the Birkenau (Auschwitz II) killing center. The decision not to target Auschwitz-Birkenau itself is still debated today. 📷: Beit Lohamei Haghetaot
