Kirk Cousins has earned more money playing football than Michael Jordan playing basketball. More than Tiger Woods has earned playing golf. More than Serena Williams earned playing tennis. His career earnings from NFL contracts exceed the entire net worth of Meryl Streep, who has three Academy Awards and 21 nominations. They exceed the entire net worth of Martin Scorsese. And they are nearly identical to Tom Brady's, who won seven Super Bowls along the way. Cousins has won one playoff game. He just signed with the Las Vegas Raiders: five years, $172 million on paper, but really a one-year, $20 million fully guaranteed deal with club options. It will be his 11th consecutive season on a fully guaranteed contract. His career earnings from NFL contracts alone are north of $320 million. Fourth highest in the history of professional football. More than Peyton Manning earned. More than Drew Brees earned. More than every running back, wide receiver, and defensive player who has ever played the game. Here is the part most people do not want to hear: the market is not broken. It is working exactly as designed. Quarterback is the highest-leverage position in football. The position touches every offensive play, affects every win probability model, and determines more outcomes than any other spot on the roster. So the market pays accordingly. Even an average quarterback commands more than an elite talent at a less important position. The market pays for position first and performance second. Kirk Cousins understood this whether he meant to or not. Fourth-round pick. No first-round hype. No generational talent label. But he played the position that the market values most, he stayed available, and he let the market do what markets do: pay a premium for the highest-leverage position even when the player filling it is average. From 2016 through 2024, no NFL player earned more cash than Kirk Cousins. Not Mahomes. Not Allen. Not anyone. $291 million over eight years for a quarterback with zero All-Pro selections, zero conference championship appearances, and a career record barely above .500. And today the Raiders handed him another $20 million guaranteed to do it again. This is exactly what is happening across most marketing budgets right now, except most businesses are making the opposite mistake. Most businesses invest heavily in the wrong position. They hire elite social media managers. They build polished email sequences. They run aggressive paid ad campaigns. They pay influencers for sponsored posts. They pour budget into PR placements. And these folks are good at what they do. Many of them are genuinely excellent at it. But they are playing wide receiver on a team that does not have a quarterback. Social media can make big plays, but it does not control the game. It resets every 48 hours. Paid ads produce yards when you feed them the budget, but the moment you stop spending, the production stops. Email moves the chains on occasion, but nobody is building a franchise around open rates. PR shows up once in a while and everyone notices when it hits, but nobody is thinking about it the rest of the season. Every one of these channels is a skill position. Valuable, sure. But not the position that determines the outcome. Search is the quarterback. It touches every customer journey. It determines whether your business shows up when someone asks ChatGPT for a recommendation, when Google's AI Overview assembles an answer, when Perplexity builds a response, when a potential customer types a question into any search bar on any device. Search determines more outcomes than every other marketing channel combined. And just like the NFL, the market pays for position first. (If you want to see where your site stands across Google and AI search, start here: seo-stuff.com/free-audit) The businesses that dominate search are not always the best at what they do. Some of them are average. But they invested at the right position and they stayed there. They built authority. They published consistently. They earned backlinks. They let the compounding work. And now when ChatGPT cites a source, it cites them. When Google's AI Overview answers a question, it references their content. When Perplexity assembles a response, their pages show up. No social media following, ad budget, or email list determined that. They played the highest-leverage position, and the market rewarded them for it. The businesses spending six figures a year on paid ads and social media are playing wide receiver on a team with no quarterback. The individual plays look good. The highlight reel is impressive. And the franchise goes nowhere because the most important position on the field is empty. That is the gap SEO Stuff was built to close. seo-stuff.com The NFL figured out decades ago that the highest-leverage position commands the highest price regardless of who fills it. That is why Kirk Cousins, with one playoff win and a career record barely above .500, has earned more money playing football than Michael Jordan earned playing basketball. The market does not care about your highlight reel. It cares about where you play. The question is whether your marketing budget is invested at the position that determines the most outcomes, or paying elite money for positions the market does not value as highly as you think it does.

Comp update: Kirk Cousins will sign a five-year, $172 million deal with the Raiders that in reality is a one-year, fully-guaranteed $20 million deal that also contains a club option for two years at $80M. The Falcons will pay Cousins $8.7 million this season, the Raiders another $1.3 million and Las Vegas also agreed to pay its new QB a fully-guaranteed $10 million roster bonus on the third day of the 2027 new league year. And maybe most notably, it also sets another new mark: this will be the 11th straight NFL season in which Cousins’ contract will be fully guaranteed.

Ryan O’Callaghan calls out TreVeyon Henderson for supporting Jaden Ivey after his anti-LGBTQ controversy and reported release by the Chicago Bulls. O’Callaghan said he never experienced that level of homophobia in his six NFL seasons, adding that Henderson despite being a 2nd-round pick is “easily replaceable” and stressing that building an inclusive locker room matters more than any one player.
