Are Large Language Models good at modeling how humans process language? A new Forum piece in @TrendsCognSci is a reminder that the question itself has different interpretations, each with its own consequences. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

@o_guest @babadookspinoza Goodnight! (And in case I wasn’t clear, yes, so many comments there are disgustingly transphobic)

@o_guest @babadookspinoza (I preferred to assume that you did because you seem like a reasonable person so I’m not sure why you thought I implied otherwise)

@o_guest @babadookspinoza Not at all! I’d just like to know where you stand on this since (clearly) not everyone agrees with it, and your replies to this point seemed somewhat deflective.

@o_guest @babadookspinoza Pretty gross, yes! I take it to mean you also agree that Hamas would murder any queers that have signed a letter saying Israel is responsible for Hamas’ murdering and kidnapping of babies, women, and elders.

@o_guest @babadookspinoza So you agree that neither what the commenters said nor what you said characterize the OP’s tweet?

@o_guest @babadookspinoza 1. Homophobia and transphobia of Hamas, not Palestinians, please recognize the difference. There’s no imagination here, they murder queers. 2. This is not about deserving genocide (they do not), it is about an Oct 7 (!) letter blaming Israel for Hamas’ terrorist attack.

@babadookspinoza Also what fucked up logic to say "homophobia that I just imagined and projected onto Palestinians means they deserve genocide" have they looked in a mirror at themselves being transphobic?

@samnastase Given all of that, is Israel’s response (which isn’t genocide) proportional? It’s not as clear cut as you’d like it to be. (Are civilian deaths always a tragedy and should be avoided as much as possible? Yes. Could Israel handle this better? Yes.)

@samnastase Hamas is hiding in hospitals, schools. They prevent Palestinians from leaving. Egypt has closed its border to them. Hamas has kidnapped babies, elders, women. It must be destroyed (this would benefit Palestinians too).

Devastating to watch colleagues I respect be completely overcome with collective psychosis and tribalism right now. The US government is bankrolling war crimes against the people of Gaza on a world-historic scale, and all you can do is chastise people for speaking up?

@samnastase As a side point, when ppl are silent about Hamas’ genocide but wake up to speak against Israel now, seems like hating Jews to me. Just like those who spoke against Hamas and aren’t severely concerned abt Gaza now seem racist against Arabs.

@samnastase I don’t think flattening Gaza would be justified, ever! And I’m glad ppl speak up against injustice—much better than staying silent. But there’s “killing civilians is bad” and there’s “here’s a history lesson abt the conflict” that is simplistic and uneducated.
