Quantum computing could eventually challenge the cryptographic algorithms that help secure the DNS and other Internet systems. While today’s quantum computers are not yet powerful enough to do so, as the technology slowly improves, there may come a time when some of the algorithms in use today could be broken by this new type of computer. Recent advances in building quantum computers have caused many in the Internet industry to shorten their predictions on when useful quantum computers might become a reality.
