This is a long weekend of loss. Brendan O'Brien, pictured here in the left background, has passed away. I remember him on Today Tonight, the precursor to Prime Time. He wrote a lovely book for children entitled The Story of Ireland. I think he was on Newstalk for a while too. RIP

News of another sad loss, Gráinne Uí Mhaitiú of Bosco fame has passed away. She had lovely Irish and got us started with the cúpla focal during the 80s. RIP

Very sorry to hear of the passing of Gary Lydon. I enjoyed him as the bomber Brennan in the Irish series Pure Mule , Inspector Stanton in Calvary and Mr Farrell in Brooklyn. RIP

This week is always a significant date in my calendar. It was the weekend when we said an unexpected goodbye to my friend and former TD Monica Barnes. She passed away on 2 May 2018, aged 82. For me getting the call from my great friend, @SarahBarnesFG delivered one hell of a shock. Much has been written about Monica the politician, the humanitarian, the campaigner for women rights. Less is known about Monica the person. She was a most incredible friend, so much fun, she was caring - always drawn to people who were down on their luck and they seemed to be drawn to her. When you were in her company you had her attention - 100% (a nightmare for anyone organising a canvas with her trying to cover ground). She did indignation unlike anyone I’ve known. She was a wonderful story teller, stories embellished, her laughing as she was trying to tell the story and she was simply infectious. She loved a great party often her own home or in your home. Her mantra as she laid out buffet supper was always do you think we have enough for everyone, did I forget something? And normally she didn’t. Except on one occasion, her 80th birthday party. Table laid out, a superb buffet and the inevitable-have I forgotten something ? I made everyone queue for the buffet and fill their plates. LaterSarah got a call, opened the door and here were gentlemen in dress and huge ban maries of Indian feed. My role was again to drive consumption, so the queue began again. We laugh at it - in allthe fuss the Indian ordered perhaps many weeks before had slipped everyone’s mind. When she sang the songs like BlueBerry Hill the words could stray which made it quite a challenge to those of us who loved a singsong. And a tradition towards the end of the night, early morning was we closed the evening with our own special rendition of ‘well take manhattan’ followed by a rousing rendition of New York New York - on one occasion someone turning off the lights before the encore. And that the thing about great people they leave great memories and go with you wanting more.

The death of Gabriel Rosenstock marks a profound loss to Irish-language literature. His work redefined the possibilities of contemporary poetry in Irish, particularly through his engagement with haiku and cross-cultural translation. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

@ImtaBrendan I borrowed What We Can Know from the library for spring break. I tried to hard to read it. I'm not sure if it was the train or the book, but I didn't make much progress.

B2 cert arrived today! When we learn our language as adults, we have to earn every focal (word) & frása (phrase). Céim ar chéim (step by step), we get there. When we do, tá sé tuillte againn (we have earned it) ❤️ Buíochas le @niallosiadhail & @gaelchultur !! #100daysofGaeilge

Today is publication day for Seán Lemass: The Lost Memoir. It was such a privilege to edit the memoir of a man who was not just an outstanding patriot, but witty, insightful and wise with a rare facility to present complex political ideas in clear language. Many thanks to @Hodges_Figgis for the wonderful display.

The past week seems to be filled with a lot of people passing away unexpectedly. Sad to see Dolores Keane has died. She had a tough life but shared her story to help others and she leaves behind a lasting mark on Irish music. Rest in peace.
