Ibn 'Asākir al-Shāfii (رحمه الله) said: The Hanābilah who were settled in Baghdād have historically relied on the Ash'ariyyah against Ahl al-Bid'ah [innovators], because they are Mutakallimin [theologians] from Ahl al-Ithbāt [people of affirmation]. So whoever from the Hanābilah speaks against the Mubtadiiyyah [innovators] speaks in the language of the Ash'ariyyah, and whoever wants to verify a matter in Ușul (principles of the religion), he learns it from the Ash'ariyyah. [Tabyin kadhib al-muftari fimā nusiba ila al-lmām Abi al-Hasan al-Ash'ari, p. 163]
