I developed an ethical AI use minicourse that attracted more than 1,500 people. I’ve read a lot of weak takes on AI in academic writing. This paper is different. 10 high-level principles every researcher should take from this paper on ethical AI use in academic writing It does not say “use AI for everything.” It does not say “avoid AI completely.” It draws a clearer line: AI can support academic writing. It should not replace scholarship. ——- Here are the 10 biggest lessons 1. AI assistance is not the same as AI authorship The paper is clear that generative AI tools do not meet accepted standards for authorship. A tool cannot take responsibility for a paper. Human authors still carry that responsibility. 2. Transparency is non-negotiable If AI is used in the writing process, its use should be clearly and explicitly disclosed. 3. Use AI where it is strongest The authors place grammar, spelling, readability, and translation in the most acceptable tier of use. 4. Treat idea-generation uses with caution The paper places outlining, summarizing, improving clarity, and brainstorming in a middle category. These uses can be reasonable, but only if the author already has the core ideas and carefully reviews the output. 5. Do not outsource your thinking The paper warns against using AI to generate new concepts, draft de novo text, interpret data, conduct literature reviews, check ethical compliance, or judge plagiarism. Those are the parts of writing in which scholarship itself is tested. 6. Accuracy still belongs to the human author LLMs generate fluent text from statistical patterns. They lack built-in fact-checking, which is one reason hallucinations and bias remain real problems. 7. References are a major danger zone The paper cites evidence that AI-generated references can be fabricated or inaccurate at alarming rates. That is why authors remain fully responsible for checking every citation and source. 8. Ethical use should preserve human skill, not erode it One of the strongest points in the paper is that scholars should worry not just about productivity, but about what happens when people become too dependent on AI for ideation, writing, and early interpretation. That kind of dependence can weaken scholarly growth. 9. Human oversight is not optional The paper leans on three core ideas for responsible use: human vetting, substantial human contribution, and acknowledgement. In practice, that means AI output should always be reviewed, checked, and owned by the researcher. 10. Before using AI, ask four hard questions The paper ends with a practical checklist. Before using AI in a manuscript, ask: → Are the primary ideas and interpretations still mine? → Am I using AI in a way that preserves core research and writing skills? → Have I checked everything for accuracy, reliability, and bias? → Have I disclosed clearly how AI was used? That, to me, is the strongest takeaway from the paper. Reference: Cheng A, Calhoun A, Reedy G. Artificial intelligence-assisted academic writing: recommendations for ethical use.

72,000 killed in the genocide in Gaza. 1 million+ displaced in Lebanon. 1,700 settler attacks in the West Bank. And now war in Iran. Sending 20,000+ more bombs to Netanyahu isn’t just immoral—it’s illegal. That’s why I introduced legislation to stop it.

Israel is wiping out bridge after bridge in Lebanon. What Israel is currently doing in southern Lebanon is clearly aimed at ethnic cleansing and colonization, using the same war crime tactics used in the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Displaced over a million people. Wiping out entire villages. Control of the sea entrances in southern Lebanon. Separating the South from rest of Lebanon by bombing bridges and roads. Civilians can't flee. Ambulances cannot reach the wounded or the hospitals on the other side. Laying siege cruelly cut off all fuel from entering, with threats to bomb aid trucks and medical vehicles heading south. Power is out in hospitals and homes. Food is rotting. Water pumps stopped working. Entire communities are cut off from essential supplies. Food, water, and medical supplies currently available in the south are sufficient for at least a month, after which we will see another Gaza in Lebanon. They are literally repeating it all on Lebanon, with flagrant violations of international law and the international community remains silent.

Reflecting on Omani Foreign Minister's analysis. Experts have long warned: Palestine is not the end, it is the beginning. As the flames reach Iran, Lebanon, the Gulf, this can be stopped, but only if int'l law is not treated as optional. Otherwise, this is just the beginning.
Arnaud Bertrand@RnaudBertrand

This is probably the most important article of the month: an op-ed by Oman's Foreign Minister, who mediated the talks between the U.S. and Iran, in which he writes that the U.S. "has lost control of its foreign policy" to Israel. He repeats that a deal was possible as an outcome of the talks (something confirmed by the UK's National Security Advisor, who also attended: x.com/i/status/20341…) and that the military strike by the U.S. and Israel was "a shock." Interestingly, given he is one of Iran's neighbors and given that Oman has been struck multiple times by Iran since the war began (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2026_Iran…), he writes that "Iran’s retaliation against what it claims are American targets on the territory of its neighbours was an inevitable result" of the U.S.-Israeli attack. He describes it as "probably the only rational option available to the Iranian leadership." He says the war "endangers" the region's entire "economic model in which global sport, tourism, aviation and technology were to play an important role." He adds that "if this had not been anticipated by the architects of this war, that was surely a grave miscalculation." But, he adds, the "greatest miscalculation" of all for the U.S. "was allowing itself to be drawn into this war in the first place." In his view this was the doing of "Israel’s leadership" who "persuaded America that Iran had been so weakened by sanctions, internal divisions and the American-Israeli bombings of its nuclear sites last June, that an unconditional surrender would swiftly follow the initial assault and the assassination of the supreme leader." Obviously, this proved completely wrong, and the U.S. is now in a quagmire. He says that, given this, "America’s friends have a responsibility to tell the truth," which is that "there are two parties to this war who have nothing to gain from it," namely "Iran and America." He says that all of the U.S. interests in the region (end to nuclear proliferation, secure energy supply chains, investment opportunities) are "best achieved with Iran at peace." As he writes, "this is an uncomfortable truth to tell, because it involves indicating the extent to which America has lost control of its own foreign policy. But it must be told." He then proposes a couple of paths to get back to the negotiating table, although he recognizes how difficult it would be for Iran "to return to dialogue with an administration that twice switched abruptly from talks to bombing and assassination." That's perhaps the most profound damage Trump did during this entire episode: the complete discrediting of diplomacy. If Iran was taught anything, it is: don't negotiate with the U.S., it's a trap that will literally kill you. The great irony of the man who sold himself as a dealmaker is that he taught the world one thing: don't make deals with my country. Link to the article: economist.com/by-invitation/…
