Brown and Black people are at a higher risk of developing conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. That is why it is especially important that we take care of our health and get preventative checks when we need to.    Today, there was a brilliant health awareness campaign in the Ilford Exchange, with leaflets in Punjabi and Urdu, healthcare professionals and a blood pressure machine!   Thank you to all those who were part of the event, including Fab.Fit and @BreastCancerNow.

Council tax debt collection has been far too aggressive, pushing vulnerable households deeper into hardship. I welcome the government’s long-overdue reform to debt collection. From next April, councils must give people 63 days not just 14 to pay, and work with them on realistic repayment plans. Admin fees will be capped at £100, and bills will be spread over 12 months by default instead of 10, cutting monthly costs for low-income families. This will make the system fairer and more compassionate for those facing genuine hardship. gov.uk/government/new…

✅ The best ambulance response times in half a decade. ✅ Waiting lists at the lowest levels in three years. ✅ Best A&E performance in four years. Health Secretary @wesstreeting praises staff helping to improve the NHS, but is 'frustrated' to narrowly miss other targets.

Making sure women have more choice, voice and power in the NHS. Tackling the everyday sexism and medical misogyny that sees women dismissed and caused avoidable harm. Faster access to better care. Proud to launch the @UKLabour Government’s Women’s Health Strategy today 👇🏻

Today, on Yom HaShoah we remember the 6 million Jewish people who were brutally murdered during the Holocaust.    The Holocaust inflicted pain on a scale that most of us will never truly comprehend; pain that did not end in 1945, and that still echoes through families and generations of the Jewish community.   The Holocaust exemplifies the very worst of humanity - of what happens when lies go unchallenged and when hatred is tolerated.    'Never again' is not just a promise, it is a duty to stamp out antisemitism when we see it; when it’s inconvenient and when it masquerades as opinion.

Today marks the 107th anniversary of the deep tragedy of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. On 13 April 1919, General Dyer and his troops blocked the only exit of the park and ordered his men to open fire on the crowd of those celebrating Vaisakhi and protesting against the Rowlatt Act and the arrest of pro-independence activists. The troops continued firing even as protesters attempted to flee, leaving over 1,000 people dead and more than 1,000 others injured. This day remains a stain on our history, exemplifying the brutality of colonial rule. It will forever stand as a moment of profound grief for the descendants of those who were present at Jallianwala Bagh on that fateful day. No words or actions can undo the immense harm that was caused, but the descendants of the victims deserve proper recognition and a formal apology for the violence that continues to reverberate across generations.

So pleased by today’s announcement from @MayorofLondon pledging £30million for youth clubs across London. Youth clubs are vital spaces for young people to build community and friendship after school and on weekends. In Ilford, we protected Loxford Youth Centre and this additional funding will secure more spaces for young people outside of the classroom.

Today marks the Prakash Purab of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, who gave his life in defence of others and stood unwaveringly for the freedom of religion.   Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji did not stand up only for Sikhs, but also for Hindus, guided by the profound belief that despite our differences, we are all one and share a common humanity. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire us to respect and embrace those from different backgrounds, and to have the courage to stand up for one another in the face of injustice.

This week, the two child benefit cap has been scrapped - lifting over 5,000 children out of poverty in Ilford South.   This is a clear investment in our children and in our future. Combined with Best Start Family Hubs and support for working families, this Government is making sure that every child gets the best possible start in life.
