I claim no particular familiarity with these intra-MAGA disputes but it is intriguing that the chief DC lobbyist (Mike Flynn) of the Kremlin-backed Bosnian Serb secessionist regime is now accused of being part of a “foreign-linked influence network” by his own ideological cohort. I do not believe that this will, in the near term, result in a revisiting of the decision to lift all US sanctions vs. Milorad Dodik and his regime, despite the same being obviously detrimental to US security interests in Southeastern Europe. But certainly Flynn’s potential ejection from the administration’s inner circle would rationalize aspects of its decision-making.
Alexis Wilkins@AlexisWilkins

THREAD: (1/13) A foreign-linked influence network has been running coordinated operations against the Trump administration for 22 months. I know it's real because they ran one against me. I was targeted in something I knew was far from organic. This level of media is isolating, unwanted, and unwarranted. There was nobody to help, nobody to jump in and say, this is a false OP and help me. Well, I don’t believe in problems without solutions, so I’ve spent the last few months learning to build programs to utilize publicly available information to prove that this is way bigger than me. This is about creating chaos in the Republican Party. It's about the organized effort to lose Republicans the midterms and subvert President Trump's agenda, and I have the data for you to see 🧵

The Ultras firm associated with HŠK Zrinjski Mostar (both known to be closely linked with Croat ultranationalism & related neo-Nazi groups) has little to do with football. Speak to folks in Mostar, you soon realize its functionally the paramilitary arm of @Dragan_Covic's HDZ.

Dear Twitter followers: my friend and colleague @panyiszabolcs is under attack by Viktor Orban’s camp for exposing how Hungary’s foreign minister conspires with Sergei Lavrov to promote pro-Russian politics not just in Hungary but other countries in Europe. Szabolcs brings receipts in the form of transcribed phone calls (see below). This comes at a pivotal time, with Hungary facing a national election in less than two weeks and Orban trailing far behind @magyarpeterMP. A photo finish in Slovenia, with PM Robert Golob's ruling Freedom Movement just edging Orban-Dodik ally Jansa's SDS by 0.50%. The seat distribution in the National Assembly, however, is challenging for Golob and Jansa alike; unstable govt or even hung parliament likely.

Slovenia heads to the polls today, with SDS boss Janez Jansa, a mainstay of the country’s politics since (at least) 1990, attempting to secure his fourth premiership (!), all while still portraying himself as an anti-establishment populist. Beyond parody.

Robert Mueller was an American patriot, who performed his defining assignment, as with all his preceding duties, professionally and without prejudice. The stain is on those who were unable or unwilling to act on the contents of his 2019 report to safeguard the republic.

I want to again thank everyone who has been listening to @balkanomnicon but especially the smattering of listeners in Ukraine. Seeing this little sliver of data genuinely made me quite emotional. I hope these conversations provide a brief moment of respite for you, friends. 🇺🇦

I said a few weeks ago that there was an obvious disinformation campaign underway on this website by a handful of anonymous accounts to sow discord between Bosnians and Bosniaks and Kosovars and Albanians. This is the evidence of how manufactured that malign campaign is.

A blessed Eid al-Fitr to all observing the holiday. These are difficult and frightening days for so many. Which is why I hope the past month of reflection has only renewed your commitment to mercy, charity, community, and service; that which all the great traditions ask of us.

The U.S. intel community assesses that Russia is still supporting the secession of the RS entity in Bosnia. Yet the Trump administration lifted vs. sanctions Milorad Dodik and his entire secessionist regime last Oct, with little justification. Congress should demand answers.

This is a cool new student-led initiative promoting informed discussion about BiH and the Western Balkans, civic-engagement, and youth leadership. I’ve been chatting with their team over the last few days and am excited to see their project grow. Give ‘em a follow. 👇

We asked students in Groningen a few questions about Bosnia and Herzegovina and the EU. Perspectives varied quite a bit, especially across different fields of study from politics to economics. Part of what we’re trying to do with EyeOnBiH is open up more of these conversations.

All leading Bosniak political leaders in Bosnia, the country’s Islamic Community leadership, and leading members of the Bosniak academic and cultural elite have released a joint statement categorically rejecting Islamophobia, antisemitism, and all others forms of bigotry and historical revisionism, following a spate of incendiary, sectarian articles and media published in US tabloids, placed by hardline Serb and Croat nationalist lobbyists and cut-outs. I wish that these kinds of statements were not necessary for the Bosniak community to assert its basic right to exist in peace within its homeland. Alas, they are. And given that they are, it is important that all of the major actors were able to put aside their partisan disputes and make a clear, joint statement asserting the shared liberal, secular, and democratic principles animating Bosniak national politics (and identity) in Bosnia today.

The concept of “legitimate representation” (i.e. segregated voting) does not appear in the Washington or Dayton agreements, and is a purely partisan HDZ talking point. Moreover, a succession of rulings by the @ECHR_CEDH and BiH Constitutional Court make clear that concept is incomparable with the EU acquis and ECHR, and thus both a violation of the letter and the spirit BiH’s constitutional regime. In short, BiH must choose: it must either pursue EU and NATO membership in accordance with liberal democratic norms of free and fair democratic elections. Or it can opt for the HDZ’s “legitimate representation” and remain mired in the muck of Jim Crow-style institutional discrimination. It is evident Croatia’s HDZ government wants the latter for BiH. But it is not up to them. It is up to citizens of BiH and their elected representatives.
MFA Croatia (MVEP)@MFA_Croatia

Minister @grlicradman met in Sarajevo with @DinoKonakovic to discuss bilateral relations and the Euro-Atlantic path of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with Croatia’s support for reforms and EU integration. He again emphasized that the long-term stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina rests on the principle of legitimate representation of constituent peoples in accordance with the letter and spirit of the Washington Agreement, signed on this day in 1994, and the Dayton-Paris Peace Agreement. Energy issues, including the Southern Gas Interconnection project, as well as economic cooperation, were also discussed, with readiness for further dialogue and practical solutions. It is in Croatia’s strategic interest to support Bosnia and Herzegovina in diversifying and expanding its energy sources.

Canada joining the EU would, on the one hand, be a strategic coup for Ottawa and Brussels. But it also raises significantly the prospects of a direct, kinetic conflict between the US and Europe in the decades to come. And I fear the latter is not taken seriously enough by Canadian or EU officials.

France’s foreign minister Jean-Noël Barrot has floated the idea that Canada could one day join the European Union, using the transatlantic ally as a striking example of the bloc’s global appeal. politico.eu/article/canada…

The measures imposed against Kosovo were one of the most egregious foreign policy blunders of the EU over the past thirty years. The EP should demand a full accounting from the Commission, and seek removal of all career officials involved in recommending the policy.
Admirim@admirim

The European Commission confirms that all financial measures against Kosovo have finally been lifted. Estonian MEP, EP's rapporteur for Kosovo Riho Terras sharply criticized the measures during today's debate at the Foreign Policy Committee of the European Parliament.
