My colleagues at UHN, Chris (@CmcintoshAi) and Dr. Heather Ross, just published in @NatureMedicine — and it's worth paying attention to.
pVO₂ — peak oxygen uptake — is the gold standard for gauging heart failure severity. But measuring it requires a treadmill and a hospital.
Their AI model trained on Apple Watch data can estimate pVO₂ continuously, from daily life.
The clinical hook: a 10% drop in wearable-estimated pVO₂ predicted unplanned hospitalizations with >3x elevated risk — caught roughly a week before the event.
That's not a fitness tracker. That's an early warning system for decompensation, worn on your wrist.
Ambient, passive, continuous — the kind of longitudinal signal you simply can't get from clinic visits. Proud to be at @UHN where this kind of work happens
Congratulations 🎉
