I love Star Wars, and I mean no ill will towards it by saying this... Star Wars is vastly inferior to Dune as a setting. Dune is the epitome of nuanced, to the point even the author missed out on it for a time. Star Wars is very black and white, and while that's not a mark against it Star Wars is at it's strongest as tale of good versus evil. Dune is more introspective about the nature of power and fate and builds a much more compelling world as a result. Dune is also a more well designed world as a whole.

Someone actually drew this cover. A professional illustrator drew a giant thick worm with a human face. And an editor saw this and said, Ok yes. We will go with this cover. And then the publisher, probably an old WASP in New York, said sure. We will publish this. We will print 25,000 copies of this. We will even sell it in Canada for $4.50. I thought this was the 60s too but no. It's 1981.
