Between February 13, 1967, and December 15 of that same year, The Jimi Hendrix Experience went into the studio to record sufficient material to stuff a double album to bursting point. Nearly thirty tracks were taped and completed, some reprising the band's own recent releases, others documenting moments that might never occur again, still others hammering back at songs that the group wasn't completely happy with. Recorded during three sessions at Olympic Studios—October 1, 2 and 14, 1967—the gorgeous ballad “One Rainy Wish” was featured on The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s sophomore release, Axis: Bold As Love. The track featured Hendrix performing through one of Roger Mayer’s Octavia devices which as Jimi explains, “[the sound] comes through a whole octave higher so that when playing high notes, it sounds like a whistle or a flute.” Chas Chandler was particularly fond of the song explaining, “I was very keen on that song from the very first moment I heard him play it to me. Jimi recorded three guitar parts for that song—not counterplaying—as he had done with “The Wind Cries Mary.” These guitar parts each picked up where the other one left off. Jimi Hendrix returned to New York's Record Plant Studios on March 24, 1970 where he recorded "Bleeding Heart" with Billy Cox and a young drummer, Steve Angel. Additional overdubs were later added at Electric Lady Studios, with Mitch Mitchell replacing Angel's original percussion. The track eventually saw release on the 1972 WAR HEROES compilation.
