@ajeya_cotra @TheZvi @EpochAIResearch arithmetic is a bit of an oversimplification. there are a lot of situations in slay the spire where a syntactical understanding of what's happening isn't enough because the syntax is so broad and behaves so differently depending on tiny variations. mcts prob helps a lot.

@ajeya_cotra @TheZvi @EpochAIResearch it is a tiny world! the best i know for sts is still using a bunch of if/thens and beats watcher a0 50% of the time (good players are a20 80%+). the big issue is maybe that LLM's struggle w/ novel arithmetic? i think a MCTS on top of a NN like alphago will get there eventually.

@TheZvi @ajeya_cotra @EpochAIResearch noone has made anything that beats slay the spire 1 anywhere near top humans yet. it's substantially more complex than go. it could happen at some point but prob via a specialized program with a lot of compute first. current llm's can't accurately work out the rules.

Without at least a full rules set I think AIXI loses to an experienced @JoINrbs here.

@keatstalol anyway, you could have very easily tried putting 17 lotuses in place of 23 lands in a boros deck and goldfished it twice and been like "holy shit this card is fucking insane" and we would have never had to have this conversation.

@keatstalol well, we can examine that by jumping into vintage drafts and trying to take lotus p1p1 sometimes and red card from a pack with lotus p1p1 the other times, or, if we'd like to get relevant data in under 50 years, we could try goldfishing a deck with some lotuses in it.

@JoINrbs but this is the actual claim being made, that some cards are better than lotus when forcing boros aggro, not that "a deck with lotuses instead of lands is stronger than one with lands" or that lotus isn't the strongest card in the format overall

@keatstalol a simple thing you could do is just look at some sample openers from some boros decklists and see how good adding a lotus over a land tends to be. the goal is to get a sense for the strength of the card, not to attempt an academic research project with p < 0.05.
