This (see article below) is one of those things that makes my blood run cold in fear and worry for our democracy, students, and our future as a society. For reasons they thought were legitimate but should frighten every one of us, the police in Massachusetts interrupted classes in a middle school and searched everyone for a book on the banned books list. It was due to one complaint, so the police thought they should do a formal investigation for the "illegal" possession of the banned book, as if a crime was being committed. Was it criminal? Is a student choosing to read the book on his, her, or their own a crime? How about one student shares the interest of one of these books with a classmate - Is that now a crime? This is an ominous and slippery slope, and it's just one of many such actions taking place in classrooms in many states.
