.@esa is planning a mission to Saturn’s moon Enceladus to search for signs of life. Enceladus is particularly interesting because observations from Cassini have revealed that it has a subsurface ocean under its icy crust, with plumes of water, ice particles, and organic molecules erupting through fractures at its south pole, conditions which might be suitable for life. The proposed mission, under ESA’s Voyage 2050 framework, would involve both an orbiter and a lander. The orbiter would sample material from the plumes, while the lander would attempt to touch down on the surface. ESA aims to launch around 2042, arriving in the Saturn system by 2053, with the landing planned for about 2058. To make this happen, ESA is refining the science goals and technologies needed, including in-orbit assembly, working in extreme cold, specialized landing equipment and advanced instruments. The mission still needs formal approval, which is expected in a ministerial meeting in Bremen in November.
