After this set, RapMonster went on to get 2nd place at a major. I just need to take a moment to stress how unfathomably incredible that is. RapM just became the highest placing Luigi player of all time, and he's a young student who was literally doing homework at the venue while the event was happening. This record was set by Plup nearly a full decade ago (5th) and was just shattered in a game that's over 24 years old. He is younger than the game itself by a handful of years. Within the past few weeks, he has already done the impossible multiple times. He was able to take a set off of the current best Falcon player in the world (Wizzrobe), a matchup many thought was an auto-loss for him, and not only did he just make top 8 at a major for the first time, he was only 1 spot away from winning the whole thing. In a game where many people thought the future of this game would be nothing but perfectly played Fox dittos where sets are determined by port priority, it is instead being taken over by a bunch of kids playing characters like Donkey Kong, Pikachu, and Luigi. This Luigi player in particular looks like he has what it takes to go all the way. You never know what the future will hold.

Today, I climbed an incredibly difficult path. If I had managed to overcome just one final step, it would have been a truly happy moment, but I guess I was lacking in stamina and focus. This is what gaming in your 40s is like. It requires even more effort and physical endurance than when you’re young. It’s 2026, we are gonna be 6 expansions deep into FFXIV soon. Can we stop with the weird gatekeepy behavior if someone doesn’t want to play through 250 hours of story to be able to play some of the best MMO raid encounters ever made? Heaven forbid someone asks you a small lore question if they start getting interested in the story after starting the game 10 years late. Are we really gonna keep driving people away with this weird NIMBY ritual? Just use your social skills (lol) and answer the small question, suggest they start a story alt on their downtime, or direct them to a synopsis video on YouTube. Crying about “story skippers” this deep into a game’s development cycle is peak cringe. If they set up a skip to Dawntrail for new characters to jump into the new story arc I and many others feel like it would be beneficial for the game’s long term health. While the Hydaelyn/Zodiark arc is great storytelling it’s also not a sacred cow for people to clutch pearls over. At the end of the day, it’s a game to be played. We’re all better than this and should start acting like it.
