Is Your Alignment Helping or Hurting You? A common mistake I see with young punters is walking an aggressive line, then at the last second, dumping the ball inside and swinging across their body. It might feel like you’re generating more power, but in reality, it’s only making you inconsistent. A better approach is to start with a much skinnier line to the right or left and gradually widen out. Your goal should be to hit the ball outside the numbers—if you can reach the sideline, even better. But until you’re consistently turning the ball over, that shouldn’t be the main focus. For your practices, set up a cone as a visual target to help you stay on your line. Focus on walking directly to the cone and punting straight through it on that same path.
