The brilliant Kate Ho has passed away.
She was an amazing economist and a genuinely kind human being. Her work shaped how we think about healthcare markets and her generosity touched everyone lucky enough to know her.
The profession and the world are poorer without her.

Fundamentally, it depends on whether you want to measure (a) how well someone understands the material or (b) how well they can demonstrate understanding under time pressure. These are BOTH potentially important things to measure and are different.

This is too gentle. In 2024, Biden said the economy was strong when the numbers supported him — tone-deaf maybe, but factual. Now the numbers are weaker, so that claim now has little basis in reality… aside from the stock market, which many argue may be in bubble territory.

In Evanston yesterday, immigration agents went around with guns drawn, interrupting Halloween gatherings (my kid’s school moved theirs indoors), and pulling people from cars. Local police had to step in to separate agents from residents. This cannot become the new normal.
