LMPs can be modeled as DC circuit voltages. In new work with @gjharsha , we show that price behavior can be interpreted and modeled using DC circuits, meaning you don't have to understand Lagrangian duality to understand LMPs - you just have to remember high school physics. 🧵

@andrew_carter That would be hilarious. Apparently they moved to Saudi Arabia so he could take another propane gig, but I won’t spoil much more for you…

@kyrib It's real, kanye has expressed interest in designing and building towns and cities for about a decade now. He was really serious about it and tried building prototype designs in Wyoming but it ultimately failed.

there was an april fool's joke on a sparkling water machine where I hit "Pour" and it wasn't working. I looked and it said "APRIL FOOLS!" on the screen Even worse is that I'm compiling a LaTeX document in Overleaf and \date{\today} is showing April 2. These pranks i swear to god

@kyrib I miss the tunnel crawls and the ball pit. Granted they were germ machines and 9 out of 10 chances of stomachs bugs! But hey, my immune system got powerful!

@kyrib That far north I'm suspecting it's more "heating to 18C" rather than cooling lol. Either way I can't think of a better place to store something you wish to keep so cold.

Very interested lately in the power and energy situation of the Norwegian seed vault (Svalbard Global Seed Vault). It seems that it is primarily powered by electricity coming from the town of Longyearbyen, which used to house the world’s northernmost coal plant. There are backup generators, I’m guessing diesel. But what kind of power consumption does a seed vault have? How many layers of redundancy does it have if those generators fail? As the city of Longyearbyen transitions to other energy sources, how does this impact reliability? Solar production that far north is quite interesting to think about - looks like the city has some solar, battery energy storage, and wind as well. A lot of the energy appears to be used for cooling (the seeds are kept at -18C). The whole thing seems a bit precarious to me for some reason due to its remote location. The safety of the seeds, people!

On Monday I’ll be starting at Google DeepMind as a Visiting Researcher for my sabbatical (Jan-Dec 2025). Looking forward to contributing to solving challenging problems in the AI+Optimization for power systems space!

sometimes I wonder how kid-dependent the experience is. Like, I have a 2.5 month old and I think we got really lucky. I have thankfully gotten the really rewarding experience feelings and even with the very challenging days, overall I find myself thinking “hmm maybe I want 3 kids instead of 2”. I could absolutely see myself saying “lol absolutely no more kids” if the bad days were most of the days. But maybe even that opinion would change as the kid got older.

(there have been good moments and I'm sure it'll get better but) ...4mo into parenthood... I mostly hate it so far. I've been afraid to think/say this but I figure if I just tweet it then I might feel more free to have my real thoughts whatever they are.

Lots of wrong answers in the replies. As the former King of SMS, it’s simple: It’s to warm the number. You cannot send bulk texts containing a URL until your number has earned credibility with phone carriers. To earn credibility, it needs to have replies from other numbers. So the message they send is always something that tries to elicit a response from you. Once response rate is high and the phone number is warmed, they send tens of thousands of spam links to people. Best way to fight back? Replying STOP in all caps will immediately flag the number.

Can someone explain what these phishing texts hope to accomplish? What's the goal?
