In October 2024, I have recorded 49 fatal landslides globally, which have claimed 145 lives. This is the second highest October total in my dataset. eos.org/thelandslidebl…

With bridges swept away and highways blocked by landslides, "the capital city is cut off from the rest of the country," Arun Bhakta Shrestha, Climate and Environmental Risks Lead at ICIMOD, tells ABC Australia in an interview on Monday. He calls it a "very anomalous year" in terms of the timing and amount of rain. Sept 27, 2024, #Kathmandu recorded its highest historic rainfall in 54 yrs, more in south up to 323 mm in just 24 hrs. The #extreme #climate with urban expansion by #floodplain #encroachment , resulted in significant losses and highlighted #urgent need for future precautions.

DEATH TOLL CLIMBS AS TORRENTIAL RAINS POUND NEPAL As three days of heavy rain brings loss of life and widespread destruction, scientists point to haphazard development’s role in amplifying climate change risks in Himalayan nation.   After rainfall exceeding 340mm fell in under three days Bagmati is flowing at 6.16 metres, 2.16m above danger levels. Rescue-workers have used boats and helicopters to evacuate affected citizens stranded in their homes as water levels rose. The Government of Nepal states 66 people have been killed since early on Friday, with 60 injured and 69 missing, with floods and landslides closing major roads and disrupting domestic air travel.   Contrary to earlier forecasts which showed another day of heavy rain, ICIMOD’s High-Impact Weather Assessment Toolkit (HIWAT) now shows rain subsiding tomorrow (Sunday). A low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal and the relatively northerly location of the monsoon trough is the reason for this weekend’s late, and exceptionally intense rain. We continue to share our Earth Observation tools with government agencies and first responders, including those in humanitarian agencies, to help them anticipate major events and preposition aid. In August 2024, I recorded 65 fatal landslides around the world, which claimed 414 lives. The total number of fatal landslides in 2024 continues to exceed any previous year by a significant margin, probably reflecting high global atmospheric temperatures. eos.org/thelandslidebl…

A quick analysis of fatal landslides in 2024 to date indicates that the totals so far are higher than would be expected:- eos.org/thelandslidebl…
