Exclusive: Keir Starmer’s choice for the most senior civil service job repaid travel expenses after officials raised concerns
Antonia Romeo initially claimed money from the taxpayer in 2017 to cover a string of flights between New York, where she was living, and London, where her new civil service role was based.
However, she later decided to repay the expenses from her own pocket to avoid it becoming an issue as she progressed her career.
A past newspaper report calculated that Dame Antonia spent more than £31,000 on eight 7,000-mile flights and accommodation for meetings in London during the relevant period.
A government spokesman confirms the @Telegraph story this evening.
“For a short transition period in 2017 while she was acting as both Consul General in New York and Permanent Secretary for the Department for International Trade in London, Antonia incurred travel, accommodation and other costs, under an agreed arrangement.
"She suggested paying some of these back and did so. This was entirely within standard process and agreed at the time.”
This comes amid mounting scrutiny of Romeo’s time in New York back in 2017, now the PM has made clear privately he wants her to be his next Cabinet Secretary.
It should be said allies inside Whitehall have rallied to her side, alleging that a “misogynistic” whispering campaign is being waged against her.
And some are asking why so much focus is being put by critics on claims surfaced and settled almost a decade ago.
This emerged as part of a long read on Romeo’s career and the toxic briefing war playing out over her potential promotion that we publish tomorrow.

@OliDugmore @andy_higson ‘The state for your tuition. Good enough for you, good enough for me?’ brilliant from @OliDugmore. Generational inequalities aren’t exposed so clearly nearly enough.

She sings for freedom, a song shared widely, sung in Iran despite repression. A young woman sang freely on the street until regime forces tried to silence her. For years, both Iranian and Afghan women have raised their voices, for freedom, justice, and hope. #IranProtests

Bernie Sanders: "I think we need to be thinking seriously about a moratorium on these data centers. Frankly, I think you gotta slow this process down. It's not good enough for the oligarchs to tell us, 'It's coming, you adapt.' What are they talking about? Are they gonna guarantee healthcare to all people? What are they gonna do when people have no jobs? Make housing free?"

Today, Jamaica pauses to honour the life of the Honourable Jimmy Cliff, OM, a true cultural giant whose music carried the heart of our nation to the world.
Through timeless songs like Many Rivers to Cross, The Harder They Come, You Can Get It If You Really Want, and Sitting in Limbo, Jimmy Cliff told our story with honesty and soul.
His music lifted people through hard times, inspired generations, and helped to shape the global respect that Jamaican culture enjoys today.
We give thanks for his life, his contribution, and the pride he brought to Jamaica.
I extend heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and to every Jamaican, I know we feel this loss deeply.
Walk good, Jimmy Cliff. Your legacy lives on in every corner of our island and in the hearts of the Jamaican people.
