Also Toph was unique when it came to Earthbending which is why she was the first to discover it. Not only was she a bit of a prodigy but she spent her entire life blind and seeing the world purely through her bending. Feeling the vibrations and Earth around her 24/7 she was basically the most in tune Earthbender in the entire kingdom and was Earthbending ever moment for her entire life. I doubt just any Earthbender could have done metal bending. Her whole life was basically building up to discovering she could bend metal.
