The Chinese Communist Party’s callous attempts to exploit George Floyd’s tragic death for its own political gain will fail. During the best of times, Beijing ruthlessly imposes communism. Amid the most difficult challenges, the United States secures freedom.

[What the hell is going on in HK?] 1/ After almost a year of #HKprotests, a 22yo lifeguard #Sinkaho, the first person that pleaded guilty to riot charges, is sentenced to 4 yrs behind bars today, even though he just threw umbrella & helmet during #antiELAB on June 12 last year.

Eleven months after the #antiELAB protests began in earnest, the Independent Police Complaints Council's study into the events has been completed and its report has been released. A summary of highlights to follow in this thread ipcc.gov.hk/en/public_comm…

Thread: HK's Independent Police Complaints Council released their report today on the anti-ELAB protests.Their description on Sept. 29 of the incident involving Indonesian journalist Veby Indah, who was shot in her eye while covering the protests, is inaccurate.

"Unless an inquiry can be shown to be both transparent & fair...it may simply do more harm than good," @LawOfProtest told me. Here's my Dec. story on why an indep commission of inquiry into the HK police is urgent, & why the existing watchdog falls short qz.com/1753211/is-an-…

Passages like this show the extent to which IPCC swallowed #HK police Koolaid. 1st, most protests & protesters remained peaceful throughout. 2nd, why doesn’t IPCC consider protesters’ perspective? Ie, protesters had to defend themselves against increasing police violence.
Damon Pang@damon_pang

In report's concluding observations, #IPCC note #HongKong is "being dragged into #terrorism era". Asked how they arrived @ this, #HongKongPolice watchdog chair Anthony Neoh: that's not our conclusion, that's what the police chief (Chris Tang) said. WATCH: youtu.be/XtCqoV5hG_A?t=…

Other takeaways: -IPCC spends a lot of ink reminding everyone it is pretty powerless. -A huge amount of source material was drawn from LIHKG - Some of the more pointed remarks come over the Hong Kong police's inability to protect LegCo.

Interesting bit of the IPCC report that confirms what @ShibaniMahtani and I heard from a frontline officer last year, there was a plan on July 1 to push protesters away from LegCo but it was nixed by police brass.

“Everywhere you go, the problem isn’t necessarily that the police do things wrong... The issue is that they aren’t held to account in Hong Kong” says @cliffordstott Covered the cops in several US cities and this bears no resemblance to accountability: washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pac…

This report is a shocking whitewash which shows that that there is no viable mechanism in Hong Kong to ensure accountability either for police brutality or police complicity with violence by criminal thugs. hongkongfp.com/2020/05/15/in-…

This report is an absurd, preposterous whitewash. The sentence “No evidence of collusion in Yuen Long attack” alone discredits it beyond all credulity. hongkongfp.com/2020/05/15/in-…

It would seem the release of the IPCC report is part of a wider set of coordinated announcements designed to deliver the new 'truth'.
